Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Louder for the people in the back

The notion that only mediocre people benefit from unions is fundamentally flawed. Unions play a crucial role in protecting workers’ rights, ensuring fair wages, and providing a collective voice that individuals might lack on their own. Even highly skilled professionals can benefit from union representation to negotiate better working conditions and benefits. Moreover, unions help to maintain standards across industries, ensuring that all employees, regardless of tenure, are treated fairly and equitably. Dismissing unions overlooks their importance in fostering a balanced and just workplace for all employees, regardless of their individual talent.

There's a reason we don't have a lot of workers in Spain and other similar countries. Unions are great until they aren't

I personally would would love an Amer Union. I've talked to folks in other countries and it sounds like the low level ISRs are treated much better than they are here.

Spanish employee here. Our union negotiated for us during "phase 1" (it took 18 months), if they kick one of us out now we get and extra €12.5k per child, pro rata payment of up to €22k depending on age - older=more, 6 months private healthcare, pension paid until eoy, 6 months outplacement service plus more. Personally I'd get an extra €50k on top of the standard severance. So yes unions do work. €€ are approx so don't shoot me. And that's just phase 1

Sorry. I can't buy into the idea of having other people negotiating on my behalf when they will prefer things like tenure over current market value and meritocracy. Count me out.
