A promotion doesn’t mean you’re untouchable. I found that out the hard way. Just a few months after I got a raise and moved up, I was shown the door. Didn’t even get to properly enjoy the promotion. It’s a tough reality, but the truth is, a title change won’t necessarily save you.

This is facts! It's sad but staying at a lower level position is safer

Yes, you become a bigger RIF target. I got a substantial raise this year, then was RIF’d
Just remember: Promotions typically mean higher corresponding pay, and the more you make the bigger the RIF target becomes on your back. You can't win at this place.
