Thread regarding UnitedHealth Group Inc. layoffs

What health insurance coverage do UHC employees have?

Outsider here just curious on the average health insurance coverage employees have. I imagine it’s $0 deductible, small coinsurance % and very low out of pocket maximum?

@3zg+1vSh7Lsz the difference between claims processing & clinical/medical denials are 2 different things. Incorrect claims processing can administratively be corrected but when a member's plan says a procedure, test or treatment is not medically necessary or excluded, it's a wrap. Denials for Rx are the same. So no, billing codes are not the type of denials people of the masses are referring to. That would be an easy fix/correction..

As an Optum employees, we have several choices to choose from. They are all UHC.

I manage people and everyone who has a partner they can get insurance through (including myself) does so. Our health benefits are terrible considering we work for a health insurance company. It's appalling. My partners' is less than half the cost of UHC's cheapest plan offering AND is a 0 coinsurance once we hit the deductible. Not a single UHC plan is even half as good.

The coverage is quite expensive. I just moved to a smaller, regional company and the difference in costs is shocking.

Poster 5zqr+1vSh7Lsz, you bring up a very valid but often overlooked point in regards to insurance company denials. Claims are often denied because they were not billed in compliance with CMS guidelines. The insurance company is portrayed as the villain for denying the claim, but the blame should be placed on the provider for not billing correctly (for example, certain procedure codes must be billed with a modifier, no modifier and the procedure is denied)

Our employee coverage is buttcheeks, it’s terrible! Deductibles through the roof, that you never meet. I have been with UHC almost 10 years and have always had to pay out of pocket because our 7000.00 deductible is never met!

Are you kidding? Health insurance companies generally all have middle of the road to bad benefit health plans. The only coverage I found worse was a plan I had on the exchange when I was between jobs. I remember when some VP announced in 2018 that ‘Our health coverage premiums would not go up for the new year’ on a town hall. Then they showed the coverage and they the deductibles $300. That’s was just cost shifting…

HA! It's the most expensive I have ever had!! Approximately $400 monthly for myself & spouse! You'd think it would be greatly discounted or free... NOT!

They have a program called Rewards For Health where you earn money off your premiums. With a family and spouse on the coverage, I can get I think $1750 a year in premium reduction. My monthly premium is $130 for full medical, dental, vision. Deductible is where they sc--w you though but premium is cheap compared to other companies. Never had a claim denied and I've used the coverage extensively. Had some issues with doctors and facilities billing incorrectly though.

This is funny. We have horrible insurance. Premium isn’t awful but deductibles are high. I have a copay plan now so that has helped. But seriously you would think we would have amazing coverage. I have a coworker fighting on claims approvals too

Worked there for 2+ decades. Coverage WAS great back then. Progressively worse. High deductible and OOP. Premiums rising. Hoops to jump thru for HSA dollars if you don’t meet their biometric standards. I know everyone is talking about how they deny claims. We should also be talking about how this US company has a goal to outsource 70% of the work. I was caught in a RIF in which they cut 20 people, most long term, over 45, women. Replaced by 45 people in India making, I’ve heard, $500/ month.

I thought taking a job at UHG would include the best most affordable healthcare but it is the worst and most expensive I have ever seen. I use my spouses benefits. How ridicules. The one major advantage incentive to draw talent is squandered and this should tell you everything.

Worked there for 5 years. Hands down the worst insurance I have ever received from an employer. They own the insurance, the pharmacy, and the clinic. I went to an Optum/UHC clinic as an Optum/UHC employee to see my Optum/UHC provider. I had a $40 copay and as a surprise to none, Optum/UHC insurance didn't cover sh-t. I was left with the bill. It's a scam/racket, and they continue it with pride. They are most proud of their medicare advantage fraud program. As a prior supervisor, I was included in many of the insane meetings where they touted such insanity with dollar signs attached. They hired an army of nurses to simply call patients so they could bill it as a visit. Massive amounts of money and my team had to build out the infrastructure to support this. I attended meetings where the re-branding team floated implementing a membership requirement in order to squeeze an extra $25-50 a month out of each patient. Everything you are reading now is just the tip of the corruption iceberg. It gets so much worse.

The coverage is fine. Never had a claim denied and the few prior auths needed always went smoothly. BUT even the "low premium" HSA option is very expensive and comes with high deductible/coinsurance. Especially if you have family coverage and in hire salary tier. My premium is about 600 per month. So pretty cr-ppy benefit, like everything else around here.

Let’s just say I have family members whose UHC insurance plans are better than my uhc plan.

“ I imagine it’s $0 deductible, small coinsurance % and very low out of pocket maximum?”

Hahahahahahaaaahahahahaaaa! Oh, you sweet summer child! Can’t breathe…My sides!

Uh, that would be a negative. Worst employer health insurance I’ve ever had. The job I left the company for offers three options for coverage. Guess which one I DIDNT choose? Which also says that when people are given actual options, they don’t choose UHC. Check this out….in the cr-ppy plan they offer employees, if you need some treatments that would normally be covered under…well, every damn plan I’ve ever had personally in my decades-long career, to date…you have to get it all approved, and THEN…

You have to pay jacked-up premiums for a period of time to pay for that. Because you’re not already paying premiums and deductibles and copays…you gotta make sure dem widdle fellers at the investors conference don’t get dem widdle feewings hurteded. You know?

So, no…coverage su-ks just as hard and out loud for the slav…ahem, workforce as it does for gen pop…ahem, the public.

I've worked for healthcare companies for 30 years. Began in an academic health system (hospital). Worked for federal government. Government contractors. Caremark. Cardinal. IBM. As the healthcare advisor for large tech companies. THE ABSOLUTE WORST EMPLOYER SPONSORED HEALTH PLAN was when I worked for United healthcare. When I left I bought my own coverage, paid less, got more. UHC is greedy all around. They Claim (no pun intended) to give the employees the same Consumer Directed HSA-focused Health plan they try to peddle to their customers. Like we sell what we eat philosophy.
TRUTH UHC makes HUGE profit from consumer directed models and creating that model as the norm.
They struggle convincing Self Funded Employers to sign on for the "experiment". But when they do, it's pure cash for them....all profit low risk.

Nothing much different than you get with other large companies, and we still face the same challenges non-employee members face…. Dr-g coverage, prior auths., etc., it’s great insurance, just not any more privileged than others get.

I have a low deductible family plan with an HSA. Individual and family deductible isn’t really “low” in my opinion. Paying a few thousand dollars a year in out of pocket expenses in addition to your premium is not really low cost. Years ago when I worked for a hospital in NYC, I had the best benefits EVER! I paid the annual union dues and received an insurance package with no premium, no deductible, and no copayments. Referrals were not required and I could go out of network. Providers loved to see me coming because they knew anything they ordered would be covered. Unfortunately plans like that don’t seem to exist anymore.

Surest UHC plan with rally discounts comes out to $90 per paycheck. But that plan is rising to $113. With the CEO mu---r, which means new CEO and layoffs, probably means no raises either, meaning paycheck shrinks even more. Skipping Christmas for sure. I thought this year I was going to buy gifts for my family, but nope. Now we have to save everything and brace for an uncertain future.

Outsider yes you are. UHG self insures so no margin in it for them so not going to get much. HSA low premium here. I got about $3800 deductible. At least i can stash away the HSA bucks tax free for later healthcare use. Employees are lower on totem pole than subscribers.

I wish it was that. They have plan options and I take the HSA low deductible plan which is $1600 deductible and $4800 countenance. Costs me $180 a paycheck.
