Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Promotion Approval

Who approves the promotion? Is it the immediate supervisor, or can be higher? Does it depend on the CL level of the employee/supervisor?

N+1 as in your supervisor supervisor/manager.

There is an advancement guide for automatic recommendations in a system/tool called beqom. Your supervisor either has to select yes or no for the recommendation.

Hoever all of this can be overturned in an instant by a powerful N+1 for their favorites. Hence it is a process merely in existence on paper and no rules for HiPos. sigh, one more reason to just hate the ExxonMobil system — HiPos are leeches you can’t do anything about. I think people should start asking these questions in forums etc but everybody is so scared( rightly so) of id--ts at the helm.

gossiping, being friends with your loser manager and their bosses - this is all you need. All the hard work and hours do NOT matter if you are not liked by people who have ZERO reputation or respect outside the walls of EMHC. So thats why we come here and layoff.com to complain and whine, but the truth is these id--ts need to be shown the mirror and confronted or nothing changes.

Above CL 28, promotion is totally up to management. Many CL 28/29 are being "promoted" to a higher job where incumbent or "official classification" of job is 1 to 3 levels higher but promotion withheld/delayed. Even Outstanding with Distinction (top 5% with 38 to 40 potential) employees have quit because of the lack of promotion and better offers from outside. I know several young hipo's who moved on from upstream/trading. And know several more who plan to jump in early 2025, who already have job offers...simply waiting for RSU to vest and see the pay raise. DA announcement to cause offers to jump.

Consulting firm's algorithms do it first.
Then upper management in your division confirms if they know you, like you, want to ruin you.

Yep the goalpost has been moved so much in the last few years that it’s going to take most people much longer to get to the next CL unless they are consistently O or above. The race to the bottom cost will not stop, this is the new normal.

@nuw+1vQO0LP1 Not always the case. I’ve gotten promotions with a VG ranking and an E ranking.

It’s not based on being an IC or supervisor. It’s based on your CL whether it’s using advancement guide or whether it’s manager discretion.

If you are an individual contributor, promotions are based on the advancement guide ("system"). This is pretty much a black box even to supervisors but the 2 largest drivers of what would trigger a promotion are your last 2 rankings and your YEE. Performance needs to be consistent Os for regular promotions. Single E and your promotion will be held back for a number of years.

Supervisors are not bound by advancement guide and are based on their manager's discretion.

Basically controlled by beqom. The manager either agrees to the system's recommendation for promotion or they don't.
