Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

The good old days at exxon did you live them or remeber them.

I am not going to say it was perfect but at least I could contribute and use my skills to their fullest. Back in the 90's I was employed at EPR/URC and I was happy. I was able to build and fabricate experiments. This included drawings by hand, unistrut fab, tubing work, instrumentation , and electrical work. I could even go down to the machine shop and fab plastic and metal parts. If we needed supplies or special tools we could go to the home depot, Frys or swagelok down the street because we had P cards. We had company trucks and could pick up piping, motors and lumber. I could drive a forklift and load and unload deliveries. I could sandblast and paint electrical and gas cabinet panels I felt a happiness because I was able to do so much. Fast forward to now everything is a form and takes forever to get done. I am not allowed to do anything anymore. My P card is gone because the supervisor doesn't want to have to approve it. All the fun has been su-ked out of the place in work at. I cannot do drawings because they have a person who does them but there is a wait. We used to do all kinds of wild experimental tests. If the scientist could dream it we could build and test it. Those days are long gone and it is sad for oldies like me. I used to be the group s personal UTEC and could work on the lab computers, instruments and PLCs. I am asked why everything takes so long to get done and tell them about the systems and handcuffs on myself. It was good in the old days at least this aspect. Of course there was favoritism and the ranking was similar. PIPs were still around and a-s kissers as well. We are almost all gone and I am the last of the Mohicans. I am an endangered species on my way to extinction. Goodbye cruel exxon world.

I remember my very first day at work. Everyone I met was like "I'm so & so and I've been here 30 years, 40 years, etc." They seemed genuinely happy, and people in my group actually helped each other. Sooooo very different than now.

I was there in computing. Hired in 87.

Worked with amazing people doing interesting work.

Back then getting hired at Exxon meant your whole life would be "ok" at worst.
