It really depends on what side of the company you're talking about. An ILEC network tech..you're correct they don't have to do much. Maybe work on getting a fiber to the home or business working. A network infrastructure tech is a different animal altogether. Usually supporting long haul circuits and major customers. They have to know how to install and support G30s, Waveservers, Tellabs, Nokia cr-p, CWDM and DWDM, Cyans, Alcatel-Lucent, Titan DACS. Old 15454 stuff, on top of all the power and environmental stuff on a very aged infrastructure. They made cuts on both sides. The network infrastructure side is closer to having a network collapse due to being undermanned. It barely had enough support before last week.
First off, how did a question about layoffs turn into a network tech bashing?? Why is it so hard to comment on the actual post with facts?? Absolute bunch of id--ts on here. It would be nice to look at the responses on this post and actually see if any layoffs occurred and in what department but mo--ns have to go off topic and bash other departments. Secondly- no idea who thinks there are no network techs doing anything but jumpers. In our area there has not been a central office contractor in 8 years or longer. We do ALL equipment installs, customer circuit installs, transport issues, fiber installs/ troubleshooting etc…. But someone sure is hung up on the temp alarms???
I don't know what market you work in, but claiming that all of the skilled network techs are long gone is BS. It's amazing how many employees at this company want to do nothing but badmouth other employees who are working their as--s off.
All the skilled Co / network techs are long gone. Anything that requires brain cells is now contracted out. Basically just card swappers & heat alarm clearers at this point
Anyone calling network techs "irrelevant" is an obtuse mo--n.
CO techs. Because jumpers, optics, cards and transport chassis don't magically install themselves. OTDR shors during outages, testing for dark fiber customers. Yep, we're completely irrelevant.
CO tech? Lol, Windstream really hangs on to things irrelevant in today’s times. CO tech, retail. Do they have switchboard operators on staff?
And the moral of the story is....everybody gets a turn
Spoken like a true network tech.LOL Now go plug your fan in at the remote and clear the high heat alarm.
If they keep up*
Or get back on chat*
Love auto correct
Hope you can keep the remotes up by “running a jumper” because you will have to do it off they keep up. Go do certify you station installer out her back on chat btac

Wow, you are CLUELESS!!!
Network technician, that’s a glorified frame jumper runner tech. That’s so 1980’s. Check yourself out and collect your severance. Goodbye
Kinetic Service Delivery got hit
All that CO equipment can run itself. AI can handle it. Works great in Lincoln!
Talk about a position that has so much more equipment than you could even imagine working with. Good luck to anyone who just walks in and tries to pretend to know what they are doing.
Has anyone here if Service and Delivery was hit? Any PM/PC let go today?
So... Most senior CO (Network) tech was cut. Nice. I assume this must be enterprise.
It'd be a shame if all the enterprise techs decided to join the union. What a monkey wrench that would throw into things.
Well, “Network Technician” is the title.
Is CO technician still a thing??? Wow talk about a position that can be eliminated easily.
Our most senior CO Technician was let go this morning and field ops is currently in a meeting for KY.
