Promotion without pay increase?

Earlier this year I was promoted to manage my small team of developers for our stream. But I haven't received a salary bump. More responsibilities sure but that's about it. Anyone that going through this?

My manager is a master at telling me I won't be getting a pay rise, because of some inconsequential mistake and to just try harder for next time, because if I give up there definitely won't be one. I'm not convinced there ever was one! Meanwhile I watch colleagues who are masters at not really doing anything but showing up to meetings saying we'll take a look at that and then blaming anything and everyone else why it's not happened.

Honestly the only time I would accept it is when I already want to leave so now I can present myself as more competent employee for future work and ask for higher starting salary.

That’s an epic statement of how things are in DXC

I remember joining another team while I was at DXC, and in one of our meetings a colleague asked the very thing “I was promoted 18 months ago, I was told I would need to go through a full pay year before getting a raise, when will it be?”. I left within six months for a 40% pay rise. In my new role I have had decent pay rises each year, and when promoted I got an extra 12% right away.
Get out of DXC.

Then dont accept the promotion and let someone else on your team boss you around or do the job well and then ask for a pay increase

If you don’t like how your treated them be a grown up and change employers

The Sufi Parable:

In a clearing, in the midst of a huge forest, there lived a wizard who had a large flock of sheep. Every day he ate one sheep from the flock. The sheep caused the wizard a lot of trouble - they scattered through the forest, and he had to spend a lot of time trying to catch one sheep and gather the others back into the herd. Of course, the sheep he was going to ki-l felt it and began to fight back desperately, and its screams frightened others. And then the wizard decided to come up with such a trick – he talked to each sheep alone, and inspired each with something.

He said to one: "You're not a sheep, you're a human being just like me. You have nothing to fear, because I only ki-l and eat sheep, but you are the only person in this herd and therefore my best friend."

The second one he said: "Why are you running away from me like other sheep. You're a lioness and you have nothing to be afraid of. I only ki-l sheep, and you are my friend."

He inspired the third: "Listen, you're not a sheep, you're a wolf. A wolf that I respect. As before, I will continue to ki-l one sheep from the flock every day, but the wolf, the wizard's best friend, has nothing to fear."

So he talked to each of the sheep and impressed on each one that she was not a sheep, but a completely different animal that was different from all the other sheep in the flock. After this conversation, the behavior of the sheep completely changed – they grazed quite calmly and never ran away into the forest again. And when the wizard ki-led another sheep, they thought: "Well, another sheep was ki-led, and I, a lion, a wolf, a man, the wizard's best friend, have nothing to fear."

And even the sheep he was ki-ling stopped resisting. He just walked up to one of them and said: "Oh, my best friend, we haven't talked in a long time. Let's go to my yard. I need to consult you about the flock of sheep." And the sheep proudly followed the wizard into the yard. And there he really asked his best friend how things were going in the herd. The victim was happy to tell him everything, and then the wizard ki-led her. Since death was instantaneous, the sheep did not have time to understand anything.

The wizard was very pleased - he raised the self-esteem of each of the sheep high, as a result, they stopped bothering themselves with thoughts of inevitable death, became less neurotic, enjoyed life and quietly grazed the grass, as a result of which their meat became much tastier. Over the years, the wizard easily managed a huge herd, and the most interesting thing is that the rest of the sheep began to help him - if any too smart sheep began to guess the true state of things, then the rest of the sheep.. well, that is, "lions", "people", "wolves" - the wizard's "best friends", informed him about the strange behavior of this sheep, and the next day the wizard ate it with pleasure.

You might kid yourself you deserve more, but you're just another sheep

Yep, this is standard practice at DXC. People are given faux-roles, but never remunerated for it. You'll get promised the promotion/salary increase, but it will never happen.

Long term pain for short term gain - pretty much sums up DXC's business strategy. And they wonder why very little real value gets delivered.

DXC HR operates on “position management “. A manager can only truly promote someone if there is an open position for it. Goes the same for hiring. If there is no position in Workday to move the employee into then it’s not a real promotion. Also a salary adjustment would occur the same time as employee is changed to use the position. It’s very difficult for a manager to open any new position. There is a heavy bureaucracy and many approvals necessary. A manager has to fight hard for it and there is a lot of scrutiny from people without any real knowledge of the need. If you didn’t get a job change there is no hope for a salary adjustment.

@1amg+1v1o5CN8 As Derek/Trigger would say there are some Dave's/Rodney's out there.

Why would you be sending out emails at midnight. Do these people not have friends/family/hobbies/TV/or anything else better.

Sign of a real wannabe sad person, if they are sending chasers at that time.

@1tsx+1v1o5CN8 note that this was the result of some c-suite executive thinking we need more managers while different companies go the other way around, firing middle managers

yep I was promoted to be "manager" without pay rise or anything, I refuse additional responsibility without pay rise so the reality is I'm just the placeholder there and everything is delegated to original manager like before... The only reason I could find is that I managed to negotionate the highest salary among my coleages so now I must be the manager. (Your manager can see your salary...) Imagine the turmoil of finding out you are manager of someone who earns more than you...

There's some weird people. I know of a ADL who will attend every meeting possible, even if its about toilet roll he has to attend. Got nothing better to do.

He will also log in at near midnight and send out emails to make it look like his flogging hard.

His just a su---r, if he had any brains he would log off at 5pm.

He used to be a desktop support jockey and then volunteered to be moved up to ADL with no pay, desperados like these who try and please for no pay.

How to say you work in management and su-kle the te-t without saying you work in management and su-kling the te-t.

It's common knowledge that there hasn't been a pay bump at dxc since 2018. And that's being generous.

No more favours - no more doing other people's jobs for them because they can't or won't whether they earn more or less. My skillset is valuable. Clearly DXC can't see it. If you give it to them for free - you just proved it's worthless and they were right. Our issue is some people still give it away but not enough to save the whole account from imploding. Our time is better directed at literally anything but what DXC think it's needs us to do.

Let’s look at another way, what if you didn’t accept it and had to report to other team members , how would you feel?

Also you should t get more pay til you can prove that you can handle the new position , but you should have a documented time frame and should have asked about the time frame and the new pay before you accepted the supervisor position

This is standard practice from what I saw in over 10 years with HP/DXC.

Often they would promise someone a payrise as part of a promotion and say it will take a few months to come through. I never saw anyone actually receive that promised pay increase. Management would then blame HR.

Why did you accept more responsibility without more pay?

They lied to me about my promotion, said it was in the system but it wasn’t. I only found out from HR when I chased them up.

Almost every one who has been "lucky" enough to get a promotion. DXC will happily give you more responsibility without more reward.
