Just curious why there seems to be so many “layers” of leadership in many organizations, and if instead of job eliminating the lower people (the ones who are responsible for the actual “work”) consideration is given to reducing these roles?
I currently report to a Senior Manager who reports to a Director who reports to a Senior Director who reports to a Managing Director. Seems a little top heavy on “director” and I am certain their salary is probably equal to at least 2 of the salaries of the actual people who “do the work”.
Anyone else feel this or am I in the minority?

Respected by who? Good people left the organization or moved out of the team because of this guy. The culture is toxic. There is an entire department lead by Sr.Dir on process, and god knows what they do. There is no innovation. Managers are trying to take the credit for the work done by team members. There number of reorgs for the last 2 years. Managers and directors were pitted against each other. The 'yes men' and su-k ups promoted. you can not voice your opinions. The teams were ripped and bad managers were encouraged and promoted even. This department is not a place for someone who does the work, its for su-k ups and politicians.

In the IT organization, there were 11 Directors. Thankfully, the head of that group was job eliminated last week. He came in he-l bent to build an empire. No one respected him and overall morale was horrible. They’ve got to peel the layers and get rid of worthless high band 4 and 5’s who simply don’t know how to do the work but attempt to manage the work.
Your intuition is correct and with that being said there have been a ton of layoffs of the people in sinecure-like leadership positions where they genuinely logged into work each day and do literally nothing except order in food and hang out in meaningless WebEx meetings. If we want to talk about work then the people to look at and have loads of sympathy for are those in Band 1 and Band 2. I'm a B3 and in-office and it's sort of nice that many B1s are still remote and have avoided layoffs but knowing what they have to deal with on a daily basis. That being even more micromanaged than higher levels, getting verbally abused by justifiably angry and unjustifiably angry patients, and the $18.hour with basically little to no chance for advancement? At that point I personally would wish to be laid off or go work at Costco or Trader Joe's, both of which are incredible companies.
Yeah but many b5s and 6s have been laid off too
