Managing with fear

Why does it feel like every manager here thinks fear is the only way to get things done? Has no one let them know you catch more flies with honey than vinegar? All they're doing is crushing whatever morale is left and pushing the best people to leave in the process. Great strategy, right?

My Manager was like that. I'm pretty sure he was picked on in school and bullied as he resembled Danny Dovito, but with a higher voice. He compensated that with fear and intimidation. I argued with him a couple times and he didn't like that.

this company is far from focusing on DEI

Its actually pretty simple. Managers who rely on instilling fear to get things done are NOT managers, they are just empowered. This happens when your DEI focus and stupid things like 7x7 HR programs get jammed in. You end up losing real leaders and people who are not qualified ending up in leadership roles so you can claim you are diverse. Dont blame the shareholders, that is YOU. Shareholders buy this company stock in order to see it rise. No one buys a share of stock to see if drop just so people can keep their job. On the other hand, shareholders must vote in leadership who CAN run the company...not one focused on DEI. The ship is sinking and Gail will soon bail out and her minions will take over.

Because we have managers who require it of us, and they have managers who require it of them, and so on. And if any of us say no, they’ll replace us with someone who will say yes. If you’re looking for someone to blame, talk to the majority shareholders. We’re constantly asked to do more with less because of greed, and greed is driven by the stock market.

(Some people are poor performers who need to be managed out and who ruin it for the rest, but no manager enjoys that.)

It starts at the top. Everyone who is terrorizing their staff is being terrified by their leaders. All the way to the tippy top. And by that, I mean the shareholders.

I have not noticed that amongst people level managers & directors. The ones I’ve encountered want their team to do a good job and respect each other. Whether or not they succeed is another matter.
Now upper level management, that’s a different story. Yes, the “you can be replaced” attitude prevails at that level. There’s quite a lean into the lead by te---r school of thought there.

Because the best people have been here longer, higher salaries….. if they leave, no rif pay…….they just want the claims processed for the cheapest way possible, paying the least amount in coverage, denying every thing they can until the lawsuits happen.
