Mandatory 5 days in the office?

Amazon just announced their 5 day return to office policy effective Jan 2nd. Will all other Fortune 500 companies, who are influenced by the same institutional investors (State Street, Vangaurd, Black Rock,etc.) follow suit? Let’s Discuss where Cigna is heading.

I’d love to know why they only picked certain people to RTO. Our office on a good day only has 10 workers show up. The bathrooms are always broken, the badge reader rarely works, and to top that off the HVAC doesn’t work. In the summer the office gets over 80 degrees in there. If everyone within 50 miles is supposed to show up, how are people getting out of this mess. Top that off with the whole if you move now you are considered as quitting your position. After over a decade of moving with the military and being remote , it’s now no longer allowed unless a VP says it’s ok. I also saw my position listed as contract work with the pay being less than a third of what I make. This is just disgusting.

It already seemed obvious Cigna would eventually get to 5 days a week. They're following the same protocol as many companies. First flexible hybrid, then a mandate on how many days a week in office and what days, then back to a full 5.

From their point of view, this is just a ramp-up as they make sure they're ready for everyone to return but they dress it up as something else along the way. Throwing us little morsels we can stomach as they lead us back to the veal fattening pens.

Unpopular opinion: this makes me want to fall in line and not complain about the current state.

It is hard out there, and I’m not proud to want to bend so easily, but I hope nobody sc--ws this up for us

But that is following what everyone else is doing. They want 5 days in-office. But they will wait until everyone else is going to 5 days, then they will lockstep from the middle of the pack.

I don't think it has anything to do with following what everyone else is doing. It’s clear our elt wants everyone back in office as much as they can get away with. If other employers are mandating 5 days, they can too with less risk of losing top talent.

Cigna is for sure going to fall in lockstep with 5 shackle days a week. There's no vision here, no courage to do what's right. Easier to do what "everyone else is doing", right?

As usual, the talented employees will leave. Amazon will find out the hard way soon enough. NVIDIA, Zillow, Gitlab and many other companies are remote first and attract top talent because of these policies.

I bet this will encourage many employers to adopt similar policies since if every company is moving toward 5 days a week in office, there’s less risk of employees quitting over it since they have nowhere to go.

Most smaller startups and a growing number of corporations are fully back 5 days in the office or have a 1 day working from home per week policy. In some it's as bad as no work from home option at all, while others have it where you can work from home 2 days a month. While they may not announce it for a few months I would strongly suspect early 2025 is when they will make it mandatory 5 days a week in the office.
