Ride out CVX as long as you can. Make yourself marketable. Stay close to operations if you can.

XOM is in your face cutthroat everywhere and all the time. Some people like the challenge but other burn out quickly. When I say cutthroat, I don't mean just do your job well, but also nonstop butt kiss three levels up and knee cap those sanding next you you on the ladder at every turn (particularly anyone in a parallel group). There is a reason there are so many folks in other companies that started in Exxon.

Former XOM here. Unless you want to be PIP’d in 3 years and/or train your replacement at the BTC, stay at CVX. Whoever said XOM has “strong leaders” must have never worked there.

Xom has strong leaders... they are an energy company and they do things that makes sense for their company in the energy industry... cvx does what analysts want them to do... these analysts have little understanding of the energy business and hence cvx Is not on the right track.
To make independent decisions require real leaders like k. Mikels, xom cfo.... compare her to eb! Eb does not have half of her intellectual capacity, work ethic and vision...
We will see what happens, but leaders like Mikels will eat cvx up..
But then again , cvx strategy is to follow analysts expectations and and for that you don't need leaders, you need followers... hence the make up of our elt- mw, MN, eb, jg...

I've worked for four different major oil companies and I found them to be the same at their core. There are differences at the fringes but those are minor.

No one with sane mind will ask that question. Normally XOM doesn't hire experienced people, and there is a reason for that. Unless you are brought up in that system, you cannot survive. OP is probably hasn't worked for CVX long enough or in the magical world of IT.

Neither. Both are terrible companies to work for.

XOM is definitely a next level trash place to work.

CVX if possible, although XOM is obv better run since this decade started. If you think CVX is bad, go see how soul crushing a job at XOM is where they think you should be honored to work in their prison. Who wants to work in the Woodlands either? Awful.
