Thread regarding ConocoPhillips layoffs

Is the grass greener on the other side?

There are a lot of complaints about COP on this forum, but the same sentiment seems to be shared across the other major companies. Based on a compilation of advice, it is best to quit the industry.

Sounds like you are jealous. Maybe if you changed your attitude and worked harder you'd be high potential too.

I worked closely with RL and had very high hopes. I’m clueless in terms of “what went wrong”, but he’s a major disappointment. This company could have been a contender.

I’ve worked elsewhere. My job gave me experience with other companies. I got out. Trust me, ConocoPhillips is poison. It starts with narcissistic executive management who only care about increasing their net worth, and ends with hiring young ignorant but know-it-all employees they almost immediately dub as “high potential” where 80% quit and the remaining 10% define The Peter Principle. There is no accountability!

I think it’s working for a major that’s the problem.

Generalization that all companies are the same. They are not, each has its own culture and issues. COP is an anomaly, and is easily the worst of the worst. Worst technical ability, worst management, and a toxic culture of facebook hipos who claim the work of others as their own. Within COP, it even gets worse in BUs such as Alaska and the Incompetant Technology or Lab. Choose to work here youre a fool.

All companies are about the same. Leaders who don’t know how to interact effectively or even humanely with employees, money being spent on shiny new toys instead of time tested strategies and everyone thinking their company is substandard compared to others.
COP isn’t any different except that the leadership here seems to not be as slick or ahead of the curve as some others. My advice? Take the money, save as much as you can, and ride this beech into the ground.

Working for a company is like being married. It is easy to think that if you just had a new wife, all your problems would be solved. You get divorced, find a new 'shiny' wife and after a few short years you are back to where you started. The realization being that it takes hard work to be married and that new doesn't equate better. Same with a company. . . . .every company, every industry you will find those gripes, challenges, dislikes. I think in the oil industry in general, at least the biggest gripe you will have is not "we don't get paid enough". There is a Maslows hierarchy and we have our highlest level needs met which allows us to focus on griping about lower level things.
