Thread regarding Corning Inc. layoffs

How is everybody doing on finding new jobs?

I've been looking for more than six months and no luck so far. Luckily, I was not laid off in the last round but I'm starting to get worried.

Ah, The Corning Incorporated story, told over and over again. This is why I left. You hear the old timers talk about it and fool yourself into believing it's senility. But, alas the warning dates go up. Year after year after year. This is not the company Amo Houghton was running. It has become a perversion.

Apply to Enviornmental technologies . They don't ever seem to cut anybody and certain people have been promoted there multiple times this year even with that business not doing as well

One other thing....
The fact that you still have a job makes you much my attractive to employers. Once you are unemployed they will look at you different. It's easier to get hired while you still have a job. Why? Because employers figure that you can't be that bad at what you do because you are still being paid to do it.

It depends on your particular situation. Here are my observations as a recent ex-Sullivan Park scientist as well as my observations on others.

  • If you are a scientist and must remain in the Corning area for family reasons, you are sc--wed and will never gets job (except if SP hire you back.
  • If you are a young scientist who can relocate elsewhere in the country, you will get something quickly, even in this job market.
  • If you are an old fa-t like me (over 60) and can relocate, it's almost hopeless, but you will get something after several months. It won't be job at a nice place like SP, but it's doable. Also, expect that your salary will get a short buzz-cut.

I knew the job market was not great, but it's worse than I thought.
