Wishing Intel the best in the foundry business. Hopefully they can get their act together and compete and eventually take leadership from TSMC and UMC. However, as @1hhy states they need to clean up leadership. Hiring O'Buckley is a good choice for IFS, he is a good customer focus person. However, they will need strong leadership in tech dev and PDK development to offer the best PDKs and the best differentiated technologies to get customers to change over to Intel from TSMC and Samsung. In addition, they will need older techs and specialized techs to make money in the automotive and RF world. GF still has some decent programs there and they have foundry business processes which Intel could use. I too think Intel buying GF not for the assets but for the IP and processes would be a good buy if the price is right. As for GF's fabs if Intel did acquire, they would probably shut down F9 (or sell to someone like OnSemi), who knows about F8, keep SGP fabs and keep Dresden fabs. The main thing Intel needs from GF is the technology recipes for BCD and RF (RF SOI and SiGe), the foundry business processes for PDK and customer support, they can manufacture the technologies in many of their own fabs. We will see how this all plays out.
