Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Why all the Exxon hate?

Im not sure what is going on with all the bad comments and posts about Exxon mobil. Im sure there are some issues but issues exist everywhere. I speak for myself attempting to land a job with exxon mobil baytown as we speak. I pray and look at my application status daily to see its still in progress and hang on to hope. I left a previous job with another refiner last year and in my opinion was a bad move. That place had issues as well but my mind thinks different and I understand that no job is perfect. Yes lots of folks get up and leave more than ever for any issues they may experience but believe me guys when I say things are not always better on the other side. All I can say is be strong and thankful that you are still employed because some of us are just waiting for the opportunity. No matter how bad something may seem, hang in there and remember that the company is providing for you and your family. Are there better jobs out there? Im sure there may be but I learned the hard way and pray for a blessing.

There is so much hate because despite record profits, EM Executives put forth extra effort to abandon owned buildings, make employees hotdesk (while building palace for themselves) and degrade our health and dental coverages.

EM makes billions and our CFO and CEO chase pennies that infuriate employees.

Those of us who came in as experienced hires have better perspective. EM atmosphere, salaries and benefits (and the chance to rotate roles) are really good compared to service companies and other Houston O&G operators.

OP, you got the wrong platform. This kind of brown nosing is done these days on LI, where you can get brownie points (natural for this process) because your superiors can see it.

Nothing surprises me about the treatment of employees at exxon. Especially the protected ones. A HR person had told me they had to protect the interests of exxon at all costs. This was their number one job. She was sickened by having to downplay all of the racial, s-xist and bulling she saw. The only way HR could do anything was if there was documented proof ie emails. Even when several persons witnessed and provided written statements about the incidents it wasn't enough. Most bullies and racists are not stupid enough to email you their hate. I have been through he-l for most of my careere at exxon. I would say 60 % BAD TIMES AND 40% GOOD. The only reason i had any good time was because the a holes got fired or retired. Exxon did nothing to the attackers. When I fought back at these persons I was the one in trouble because exxon said I should not have been acting bad towards them. I was the one with behavior problems huh.

I sincerely wish we all felt safe enough to form a support group, especially for the ones such as myself who has been in PTSD counseling since I was workplace mobbed out of my job. I absolutely and genuinely LOVED my job. I was dedicated, ethical, and believed in the value which everyone (not just myself but I sacrificed myself too much via being underpaid by at least 15k a year) brought to Exxon’s continued success and I made sure I was not lacking each day to ensure bottom line contributions. And how was I treated? S-xual harrassment, bullying, sabotage, nepotism, mobbing, scapegoating, gaslighting, toxic tribalism/tribal toxicity, scoffed by site safety lead when I reported two mild but frightening s-xual violations, psychological safety, driving colleagues going out of their way to threaten me with side and head-on collisions in the Hughes Landing parking garage by driving wrong way and over empty parking spaces, supervisor and management not taking my reports of work equipment vandalism, out of the blue being publicly yelled at about something for which I had no authority or responsibility (projecting), etc. I could go on…

I shockingly found out about three years ago from former security for a VERY-HIGH LEVEL XOM executive the “protected ones” or hippos are the ones who participate in active spouse swaps and have s-x with whoever they know will help them have good reviews and move up. I realized it was not shocking after all when I recalled what all I went through and happened to me

It is not hate it is just the truth for most employees. I always here a protected and selected hipo talking about how much they love the company. You can always tell who is protected by the way they talk. Phases like I would come even if they did not pay me, or exxon is great and fair. The big difference between protected employees and the rest is exxon will always find something wrong with the rest. The hippos will always succeed even if they don't complete all their assignments. For the hippos almost is good enough for the rest it is always something missed or we could do better. The hippos brag about their ranking and raises incessantly almost mocking the rest of us. So yes there is a lot of hate and disappointment at the way the company is run. Work here and you will see and feel the truth.

Yes some of us stuck till 55. Most have suffered for many years. I am surprised at how many employees have been through the same treatment as myself. In was not a good ride for me lots of complaints about stupid deficiencies. I was the best at innovation but was dinged for communication or other unrelated things. I asked what the purpose of my work was and was told it was innovation and improvements. i then asked why I was not promoted because of my excellent innovations and improvements. They said It was because of the way I improved things. I gave up after this as there was no way to win. I just accepted every year they would find something I did wrong. It is very discouraging to see the unfair treatment and others that just cruise by. I was warned that they would knock me down when I was older but I did not believe the older ones that went through it. I am going through it now and it su-ks. So remember you have been warned.

No job is perfect but my advice is never accept a toxic culture just to stay employed. You can’t change it. It is like an infection that is more likely to change you. I suggest you consider developing your skills so you can be employed anywhere and not just in a narrowly focused area of oil and gas. It’s a dying industry.

Don’t forget the supervisors that would sell their mom for a promotion that lie and cheat every day, steal underlings work and straight up lie to the uppers to save their skin. You just haven’t had the right assanjne manager yet.

Capitalism , socialism ehh. This is about ethics and integrity. A lot of our team mates don’t even have it any more due to this toxic environment. I agree with the one post about how Xom was before 2019 to now. It’s not even close. Supers running off older folks for whatever reason. Allowing buddies to run wild. Can’t wait till it’s over.

: @1irw+1ud47tlK, I can understand that and believe me I lived through the same at my previous job which was with another oil giant. I just feel that most jobs out there these days are the same. Things are changing quickly and believe me I feel your pain as well as others. Right now, Im just trying to get a job that I can call home and make a living. I learned the hard way by leaving were I was before thinking things would be much better.

OP. What disturbs most of us is we lived an original Exxon culture which included fierce loyalty both ways in exchange for best pay and benefits in industry. This current executive mgt has decided to erode it, along with the loyalty and many of us are still pi---d. We're now like any other pissant company where wages are eroding and people come and go for their own gain and no one gives a f any more. If that suits you, then fine. They'll love you, im sure, at least til your day of reckoning comes

Im not a troll, Im a realistic person that has lived it with a different company. I have heard it all before and I was one to think things are better out there. Reality is its not that easy these days to find better. Things do change and its something that we cannot change. We live in a different world and unfortunately the the days of company loyalty are long gone.

@bnc+1ud47tlK What you’re not getting is that there are people that would prefer not to work at a “big company” if it meant better culture, responsibility, less stress, better location, etc.

I can understand all the comments but as I mentioned I worked for a refiner for 21 years and saw a ton of changes over the years and saw so many people leave. I left for other reasons but also witnessed all the changes while I was there. I thought the grass on the other side was greener but soon realized it was not. Its tough to get hired with a big company so all I can say is stay positive and make the best of it. If a better opportunity arises then take it but only if you are sure that it will be better.

There is so much hate because within weeks of announcing a record $59 Billion profit, EM Executives announced implementation of Hotdesking so that buildings on campus could be abandoned/mothballed to save a few thousand dollars. This showed exactly how much EM Executives cared about employees.

Next the EM Executives doubled down on expanding the Bangalore Technology Center despite the extraordinary amount of rework required for all the technical deliverables produced there, and annually lay off 5% of HC10 staff, mostly loyal productive employees with over 15 years of service.

One good upcoming milestone is that soon the EM Executives will PIP enough HC10 experts such that there will not be enough experts left to correct all those dangerous mistakes from Bangalore and a Valdez level event is imminent.

EM Executives should not fire all the experts when setting records of highest profits. Counterintuitive and counterproductive.

if what you need is a reliably paying position, i hope you get the job. I know people are excited to join EM. But don't try to understand people that spent years in the machinery. Wait until you have at least 1 year behind you. "No matter how bad something may seem, hang in there" is terrible advice. A lot of us have worked and saved so that we don't have to tolerate whatever a company throws at us. and if you have a choice, you should not stay in a company that is not good for your mental health or not aligned with your longterm goals. even if it's EM.

Many of us knows there are worst employers out there, but doesn't make Exxon a good employer. Also doesn't help when most of us have been through the days of peak-Exxon. Best of luck on your job application, check back in a couple years, would love to hear your thoughts by then.
