Lumen Hacked, Not Good

This is what happens when the "SLT" does massive layoffs and all the good folks jump ship. Wonder how many accounts were compromised.

05:50 AM EDT, 10/14/2024 (MT Newswires) -- (Updates with the Chinese embassy's response in the fourth paragraph.)

Verizon Communications (VZ.NaE) , AT&T (T.NaE) , and Lumen Technologies (LUMN.NaE) are being asked by US officials about last week's alleged breaches that were believed to be made by Chinese-linked hacking group Salt Typhoon, The Wall Street Journal reported Friday.

According to the report, the House Select Committee on China sent letters Thursday asking the three companies to state when they became aware of the alleged breaches and list the measures being taken to protect their wiretap systems from attack.

That's one of the funniest things I have read in a long time. One does need to ask, doesn't Lumen use BLL to protect itself? If so then that's all the reasons why BLL is cr-p and should be scrapped. If not then why not? Are there any customers using BLL for free or paid for? Run away from that asap!

Some snips from the article.

WASHINGTON, Oct 11 (Reuters) - A bipartisan group of U.S. lawmakers asked AT&T, Verizon Communications and Lumen Technologies on Friday to answer questions after a report Chinese hackers accessed the networks of U.S. broadband providers.
House Energy and Commerce Committee Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers, a Republican, and the top Democrat on the committee Representative Frank Pallone along with Representatives Bob Latta and Doris Matsui asked the three companies to answer questions. They are seeking a briefing and detailed answers by next Friday.

"I wouldn't be surprised if the breach was on the Green"

The "bad actors" always have been, always will be 3 steps ahead of any Security Firm or Software. Gov was giving away our privacy and unique identifiers long time ago (without knowing) and with the advent of www, Google & FB...we as a people starting giving it up on our own (without knowing)! More personal, "wearable" technology coming to prove you are who you say you are and to fix the bad technology of yesterday, rinse & repeat!
Your still a number, just not a SS number! Keep drinking the Kool-Aid these elites are serving with Technology being the future...future of what exactly is what we should be asking!!

So many factors that could be responsible for this, given that the details have not been given out. Security is always seen as a "cost" and the usual suspects such as incompetent middle mgmt, a culture that punishes people that speak out about stuff that is being done slipshod fashion, and neglect of older platforms (despite them still bringing in customer money) are likely all factors.

I wouldn't be surprised if the breach was on the Green former-CenturyLink side, since the cuts of technical staff have been heaviest there, and the neglect of systems (despite still being in service, still revenue-producing) very likely quite high.

Pointing out even simple things that could be done to make Green side stuff better has been a non-starter with the incompetent Level3 middle mgmt (I'm looking at you, senior director level folks!) for years at this point.
