Thread regarding Mattel Inc. layoffs

The truth regarding the FP Rock n Play sleeper and Cradle swing.

The intent for any children’s product is that accidental misuse should never cause the death of a child. Every product goes through rigorous safety evaluations to determine the likelihood of misuse and the severity of its outcome. From that evaluation a determination is made as to whether that product is safe to go to market. Mistakes do happen, but all of this should have been avoided. I understand that a single tragedy could occur, but shame on anyone for allowing anymore deaths due to accidental misuse to occur! If a product causes a single death this way it should have been recalled! Shame on any department determining otherwise, shame on you and good luck living with yourself.

That is an absurd argument, comparing SIDS death rates to that of the Rock n Play sleeper!!! Does that make SIDS an acceptable tragic loss if I compare it to the number of infants that starve to death every year?

This is an id--tic take. The rock and play death rate was lower than SIDS by an order of magnitude.

Regarding what the below poster stated,
“if a product causes a single death needs to be recalled; cars, swimming pools, g-ns, foods that present a choking hazard, lighters, TVs, they’ve all got to go.”
Unlike the Rock n Play sleeper, with all of the above mentioned items consumers understand the risks when using them. That was clearly never the case with the Rock n Play sleeper. If consumers had been informed I guarantee that parents would have banned together sooner to have had this product removed from the market.
The extent to which this product was knowingly allowed to endure is horrifically tragic!

Doubting there is any good defense of the due diligence or QSOP that comes from the Bunker in this situation.

No, no, no. The OP clearly said, if a product causes a single death needs to be recalled; cars, swimming pools, g-ns, foods that present a choking hazard, lighters, TVs, they’ve all got to go.

parents (at least good attentive parents) are monitoring their infants and spoon feeding them. In the event that they choke, they should be ready to administer aid. the rock n play sleeper? Are they supposed to sit there like lunatics and watch the child sleep or get a little rest themselves?

John Goodman, a relaunch and a few million makes these things go away. But there will always be a stain there.

Food is not a toy and not regulated for safety like a toy. The argument is too broad.

Choking on food is a leading cause of injury and death in young children. Roughly 12,000 kids end up in emergency rooms each year for food-related choking incidents. Around 100 children die each year choking on food.

Should we ban products like hard candies, hot dogs, nuts, and grapes, since as the OP suggests, if a product causes even a single death it should be recalled?

someone will always find a new way to use a product. as with all product design, you have to design for the lowest common denominator
