Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

What do SCH, PlTM and RTE do?

As restructure and layoffs are on the horizons, what exactly do Platform Technical Managers (PLTM), Release Train Managers (RTE) and Product Line Managers (PLM) do?

I am NOT saying they’re not important or don’t contribute to delivery work, but I’m really curious, they seem to have overlapping responsibilities and don’t seem add to delivery work. In our platform, we rarely hear from our PLTM and the RTE, once in a blue moon she’ll pop up in a random DSU and say a few high level Agile things and hop off and the PLM only seems to be around at the end of a sprint to give a speech.

What’s happening behind the scenes I’m not aware of?

Anyone butthurt for being called out in doing absolutely nothing can go po-p in a bucket and make a pointless meeting with it.

@1hng, no, I do not have a cushy high paying Chevron job with all the retirement, benefits and paid days off at all. I work at Wendys but thanks for the thought.

I think I get what Op is asking, and it’s pretty obvious @1jun+1uWBFGUQ is probably a Platform Technical Manager or Release Train Engineer or a Product Line Manager and with the exception of the RTE, the PLTM and PLM don’t seem to be causing any extra useless work or providing groundless mindless marching orders (unless it’s cascaded down invisibly), they simply exist, they don’t add overhead for me and that’s 100% ok in my book… in-fact, I like our PLM she seems pretty easy going. So @1jun+1uWBFGUQ if you’re reading this and you are a PLTM or PLM, please don’t change, just do what you’ve been doing, we have enough burdens as it is.

The RTE on the other hand, omfg, if I have to hear our RTE hop on a random DSU call and spout contradictory instructions on what to do on ADO or talk about velocity or burn down and what id--tic board we need to look at and how, I’ll commit to ba----g my head on my desk until he’s done talking (folks, if you hear desk ba----g please ignore and I apologize ahead of time). I mean it’s really odd, our RTE, he’ll just randomly hop on a call and say useless s..t in a tone like he gave some god given kernel of wisdom and bone out.. gtfo with that nonsense.

Their primary role is to post emojis in teams chat during agile meetings

Wait till your Scrum Master from Engine arrives. They will be following the SAFe textbook step by step with no logic and practicality in mind. Process will be prioritised over the work.

SAFE and the chapters are the biggest failures imaginable. I think Chevron must be one of like 3 companies still trying to make SAFE work. Every other one realized that it’s bloated and expensive and not actually agile.

What the heck do YOU do OP? Not saying that what you do is worthless, but before you start slinging mud and criticizing random functions, how 'bout you put YOUR (likely worthless) cards on the table, mr. indispensable?

from using traditional agile w consulting at chevron well before Chevron implemented SAFE, i was not surprised on how CVX IT used SaFE - so many overhead which is typical Chevron IT.

nothing behind the scene i promise u… even many scrum masters just meeting facilitators .. not really helping w blockers or helping out members w their work… if u look at Agile Manifesto spirit… we created our own overhead again .. many seasoned agile teams (pre safe) don't even need scrum masters since they are self organized delivery teams already

What language is this? Is this going to be our future?

Throw the whole agile chapter out while you're at it

they do not… and how about It Ops managers? why have if ops is already w MSP? many of these managers turn a blind eye on many underperfomers in their org who cannot do real result aside from
“busy work”

Meetings. Pointless meetings.

RTEs enforce all of the useless SAFE meetings that add no value, and make sure you’re putting everything in ADO with make believe numbers for some leaders to look at.

PLTMs don’t do a single thing as far as I can tell. Not sure why we have on as well as a product line architect.

SCHs do PMP stuff twice a year even though they have no first hand idea what their direct reports have been doing all year. Supposedly they help develop their direct reports but mine’s not even technical enough to understand my questions so that’s pointless.
