Thread regarding ViaSat Inc. layoffs

Ready for the inevitable

I know displacement is coming sooner or later with the current leadership. There's no point in expecting anything better at this point. I’ll do what I need to get by until then, but I won’t leave without severance. Just following the necessary steps until the time comes!

Don't believe anything you read here - it's complete BS

It's just a bunch of disgruntled trolls who got laid off a long time ago and have no idea what's going on in the company now. They are posting nonsense and fiction.

I work with multiple teams in the company, and morale is pretty high. Everyone is hard working and dedicated to their jobs. I check Slack at midnight before bed, and so many people still have a green dot next to their name. I get late night emails from Git from people submitting code late. People are handling on call duties on the weekend. Some are even doing it while on vacation, while on maternity and paternity leave, and I've even seen it from a few people who were supposed to be retired.

I don't know anyone who is worried about layoffs. No one is leaving, and, in fact, the company has started hiring again. Of course that doesn't mean there won't be some low performers or people in business units that are no longer a priority let go here and there. But at many recent all hands, not just with Guru and Mark, but with other leaders too, there is a strong sense of optimism and a feeling that the company is moving in the right direction. It's not fake, it is a sentiment shared amongst many people I've talked with.

Look at the company's press releases. New deals and contracts are being announced on a regular basis. There are several other reasons, that cannot be named, to be positive about the future of this company. All I can say is that I have maxxed out my ESPP and cannot believe my good fortune to be acquiring shares at ridiculously low prices.

This website has had a lot of repetitive troll posts about layoffs, which make the last couple ones seem like they're not credible. But looking at everything going on lately, this time it might really happen imo.

Not worrying about it until it happens is great if you can afford it, but that's a luxury other people can't have for a number of reasons.

Why are some of you so sure we'll have more layoffs soon? I think people just like to work themselves into a tizzy. When we have some kind of an announcement, start worrying. Until then, relax and enjoy life.

Bonuses? I haven’t heard anything about bonuses in quite a while.

I asked for the VRP. Sadly, it wasn't on offer in my location.

I chose the VRP and called it quit. ViaSat is not what it was before.

The pitiful pay increase this past year and the expectation that bonuses will be low well into the future doesn't create much incentive. Add to that increasing workloads due to staff reductions makes it difficult to feel much desire to work hard. However, I've put in too many years and too much energy to walk away without severance.

Agreed on the distiction. I've pulled back on performance because I've not seen my efforts result in improvement. Think of it like this - no matter how hard I work it will not lift the company out of the hole MD and others have dug. The effect of my actions pale in comparison to the effect of their actions. I can't make up for their past and current deficiencies. They should be concerned that most employees are so under water on their stock why should we care about their failed and mediocre concepts of satellite domination. The hole they dug is so deep the incentives aren't there for me or others to fix it. Just punching the clock until a more worthwhile endeavor emerges.

Notice how many offices are empty and how dead it is at the Carlsbad campus.

I think most of us need the paycheck. But there is a difference between remaining and performing. I don’t see much performance in my group. What about other groups?

It's a rough job market right now.

Are we all frogs in the pot of boiling water? Surprisingly I haven't noticed many people leaving the company on their own volition in the past year. Maybe that's just my group. What about other groups?

You are a smart person. Marky & Gooroo & the exec are kinda immune to failure if you check the “separation terms” they negotiated for themselves. All while letting us go on maybe 3 weeks payout. The former IS do better, but the stakes are far from even. The top can’t lose and the bottom can’t win. We all built a truly Great Company.
