Thread regarding Charles Schwab Corp. layoffs

Future of Mainframe/ Legacy System Technology

Hey there,

I heard a rumor that Schwab is considering using AI in their migration of Mainframe / Legacy using AI .
Does anyone have any insights or confirmation on this?
I'm curious to know more about how they plan to leverage AI in this process.

Wipro was hacked and the attackers used that access to attack companies that Wipro had network access to.

A ) have you installed AT&T armour , if using at&t and put alert on data leaks?
have seen the result?

Your defense of this nonsese is exactly why Schwab shouldnt be doing business with India.
  1. Yes, Charles Schwab, a US-based financial services company, is opening a Technology Development Center (TDC) in Hyderabad, India

Your anger shows tat rumor is true at least wipro have demoed that they can use AI to migrate the code to java or distrubted .

Does PL1 make it better or worse?

Most of our code is written in PL/1, not COBOL.

I for one want to see Schwab continue to replace skilled Americans with foreigners from degree mill countries that dont have breach laws and lie when they're hacked...

You still stuck in 2019?.. that 5 years.
do yourself a favor.

  1. Go to app-store of fav mobile.

download at&T armor mobile security.
and put alert on leaks you will shocked the level of leak have happened.
Things have moved very fast in last 4 years.. wipro news would like , joke. nowdays

@1jec+1uRPGzS7, you should be using AI to translate the word gumbo you're copy/pasting from MS Word into something that doesnt reinforce stereotypes.

We have millions of lines of COBOL.

you can try following thing

  1. break code project wise
  2. when we know the project, break module wise
  3. which will help you reduce number of line of code.
  4. Now put that code in prompt of github co pilot, and ask following thing
  5. explain the code business level and tec level
  6. create Jira ticket with requirement you will get information.
Even with a perfect translation via AI we'd

There is no perfect translation but it can answer to question and suggestion which help break the dependency

> have to build out DB2 and other systems with scalable performance. Sorry to say

Seems you have never used this tech, do following thing
for github co-pitot , Open Ai
give the detail schema and ask it design the database system
to meet your requirement you will get answer.
sorry to say , it saves money and time to next level.

Converting COBOL to Java has been talked about for over a decade. AI engines do this better, but likely not well enough.
  1. Sorry to say , then you are not aware what is going on in AI.

do following step for co-pilot

  1. copy paste the code and ask "what code does give me technical overview and also provide high level overview
  2. if you are looking convert code in certain tech lang ask to convert that part to certain other lang.
  3. only short coming I have seen is that you use thousand line of code and ask convert,it may not able to answer.
  4. if you use in smaller way it will help
  5. Now try to use ChaptGPT
  6. Do same thing but use screenshoot and see the Magic

Not completely true there are 2 way to look on this

  1. as person we want everything can put in plate and copy paste
  2. as person I ask co-pilot/gemini/Open-ai/chatgpt and ask
  3. a) what this code doe (business understanding)
  4. b) give sample code in Java/.net/ etc
  5. Bo-m you have answer for Business and for tech which was hidden in the code.
There’s a lot of passion for the mainframe

There is No passion, there a job security because NO one want to do that any more.
if you see , mainframe team around you, it is RUN like MINI-CULT, is typical for MF team to run like.
Same people same, same team, same work , same hierarchy for decade.

and cloud and distributed teams haven’t inspired.

because You get better opportunity quickly and you move on?
Where this MF people will go, they know even if they move new project in schwab , it will like moving new cult.

It’s likely mainframe support is outsourced.

yes, thats true

It’s really hard to find new people and most are retiring.

It is not hard find but no one want to work any more on it, unless it done in India, because most of today MF (Cult members) are trained in India on project for 7 years .
With average cost 10-12 thousand dollar and year.
Would do in usa ?
Once India office becomes functional , Schwab hire experienced resource for less 20 thousand dollar a year cost

Yet another huge technical risk the CTO failed to manage.

for me it seems it intentional to save cost and mitigate risk of training people to work on things which Schwab does not want to work on

Hopefully it is not actual Indian - they only know what they can read out of a manual. Would be much better if it was "AI-artificial intelligence"

May A.I her means actual Indian?
They are opening office in India.
but if they are really using "artificial intelligence", that can be good idea for breaking so called business knowledge castle of service company.
