Converting COBOL to Java has been talked about for over a decade. AI engines do this better, but likely not well enough.
Not completely true there are 2 way to look on this
-
as person we want everything can put in plate and copy paste
-
as person I ask co-pilot/gemini/Open-ai/chatgpt and ask
-
a) what this code doe (business understanding)
-
b) give sample code in Java/.net/ etc
-
Bo-m you have answer for Business and for tech which was hidden in the code.
There’s a lot of passion for the mainframe
There is No passion, there a job security because NO one want to do that any more.
if you see , mainframe team around you, it is RUN like MINI-CULT, is typical for MF team to run like.
Same people same, same team, same work , same hierarchy for decade.
and cloud and distributed teams haven’t inspired.
because You get better opportunity quickly and you move on?
Where this MF people will go, they know even if they move new project in schwab , it will like moving new cult.
It’s likely mainframe support is outsourced.
yes, thats true
It’s really hard to find new people and most are retiring.
It is not hard find but no one want to work any more on it, unless it done in India, because most of today MF (Cult members) are trained in India on project for 7 years .
With average cost 10-12 thousand dollar and year.
Would do in usa ?
Once India office becomes functional , Schwab hire experienced resource for less 20 thousand dollar a year cost
Yet another huge technical risk the CTO failed to manage.
for me it seems it intentional to save cost and mitigate risk of training people to work on things which Schwab does not want to work on
