Not Eligible for Rehire after Layoffs

Has anyone heard of Cigna marking ex-employees that were laid off/job eliminated as “not eligible for rehire” making it difficult for them to find work at other companies?

Are you saying if offered severance and accept it you are not eligible for internal rehire? Or what, you’d have to pay it back if hired internally 2 months later? I’ve seen many people return after a layoff and severance

I was laid off last year. When I started my new job this year I had to go through a hire right background check and I saved and printed out a copy of my background check. There was nothing about ‘do not rehire’ it was just validation that I was a Cigna employee and my salary. I also asked for it in writing which I received a few days after requesting it. I wouldn’t worry.

If Cigna is marking laid off people not eligible for rehire and a new company does a background check, the new company will just get the feedback that person is not eligible for rehire and will have to decide if they want to take the chance employing them. Usually a company sees not eligible for rehire as that person having been fired or done something bad. The exact reason is often not given to the new company.

It depends, a handful of the layoffs are not eligible for rehire but they can't sit there and prevent you from getting another job somewhere else as that is highly illegal. Even on reference checks and you were fired for cause, Cigna still won't even tell an employer that because of the high chance for a lawsuit as a result of quiet blacklisting.

Lots of people have been rehired internally after being layed off.

I believe the "not eligible for rehire" refers specifically to within Cigna. Once you're packaged out, you cannot be rehired by Cigna. Pretty standard language for a layoff.

Why would they find it difficult to get hired in other companies?
