Thread regarding Fidelity Investments layoffs

Being laid off should be considered a blessing

Being affected means that you are being paid to leave the toxic culture, awful corporate politics, constant reorganizations, general disorganization, and management that only knows how to bully its employees. Can somebody please explain to me how is this not considered a good thing?

Yea it's really fun to be looking for a job when you have bills to pay, carry the health insurance for you and your family, and are worried about an economic downturn ruin your chances to get a decent job. Severance only goes so far, if you're unhappy do something about it and go look elsewhere

@1kbt+1u9l2MSj - so so true.

I saw many tech folks think they could stay in the same swim lane forever.
As a Principal SWE I always made a point to learn new stuff and not let the grass grow under my feet which served me so well inside Fido and now outside Fido.

I had my new gig all lined up in March prior to my last day at Fido June 30th.

ALWAYS keep your skillset upto date.
Never get pigeon holed into maintaining outdated technology.
Always ask yourself “will this further my career”.
In my 30+ years in tech, the above has kept me consistently employed and wanted by tech companies. I also always made top dollar. That said, you also have to be able to apply it in a quality and timely manner 😄

You can quit or go to a competitor, don’t you get paid and walked out if you go to a competitor?

Most of the folks getting laid off don't have transferable skills and probably won't cut it at real companies. Especially the lifers. I see them shamelessly pandering for someone to just give them a job through desperation "networking" on Linkedin. These are usually the people who had put zero effort into building their personal brand, never upskilling, and never would go out of their way to help someone in their current situation. Total cringe. If you got a useless degree, started a family and got a mortgage, but did nothing to build your resume and job security, I don't feel bad for you.

If you live in your parents basement absolutely. If you have to pay a mortgage, bills, and support a family then no. Sure I effing hate what Fidelitys become but I want to leave on my own terms and not someone else’s. I don’t want to deal with the stress of panic job applying and interviewing in this job market.

As someone who was impacted by recent layoffs at Fidelity, I definitely feel like it was a blessing for me for the reasons that you mentioned. If I didn't have the benefit of a good severance package or if I was in a different life stage, I would feel very differently.

I have three children and I am the breadwinner in our family so I don’t know how we would survive if I got laid off. My field is nearly impossible to get a job right now. But yeah would be such a blessing…. Smh wtf…

Grow up. Have you ever been laid off? Do you know what it feels like to have your job eliminated by someone else’s decision and not your choice? Do you know how long it takes to find a job? These kinds of comments are id--tic, offensive, and unhelpful.

Not knowing how you will provide for your family / pay your bills long term is a start…
