Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

Keep this in mind

It's a terrible job market. I know several experienced, well qualified people out of work for over a year. More experienced you are, harder it is. 130000 people from just Tech sector has already been laid off this year as per layoffs.fi

All the best.

as long as your skills are up to date you should be able to find something within a month or two. yes maybe not the big fat salary in big tech, but finance? healthcare? government? definitely. do you know some Python? one of the big 3 cloud?

or do you only know how to manage Cisco ACE or ASAs and cat 6509s from the 2000s?

if it's the latter you'll be stuck

I do see more jobs and options West rather than east and central all those who moved might have moved will have to go back.

Yes it is bad but what to do? How will keeping that in mind change any freaking thing? Just fear mongering or do you have anything meaningful to add? If we are laid off then this is the hand we are dealt with and all of us will find a way to deal with it. Might be hard but we will come to other side stronger and better than ever. Just have right support around you, and keep in mind we will be fine.

Corporate employees regardless of industry, should always be ready for layoff. There is no loyalty, just bottom lines. Don't be a sitting duck, always be prepared. Is the job market great? No, but there are a lot of "spray and pray" types out there who don't tailor their search. Tech industry bad? Work within another industry's tech organization - Financial, Insurance, Manufacturing, Pharmaceutical, Real Estate...every major industry has tech as their backbone.

Keep your resume up-to-date, research companies/roles that fit your profile and career goals. Maintain your professional network by personally reaching out to associates at other companies and letting them know you are looking and be specific as to the role you are looking for. (don't contact someone with "hey remember me from several years and two jobs ago?") Most jobs are landed through inside connections. If it's been awhile since your last search, go on YouTube and view HR professionals' channels for the latest. Brush up on your LinkedIn search skills; LI isn't great but can be useful in researching companies.

I don't work for Cisco anymore, but still have friends there. It's sad to see Cisco falling apart and laying off so many people... Good luck to those impacted and may layoff be a blessing in disguise that propels you toward a better career opportunity.

Job market is good unless you have been sitting on your hands at Cisco for years with no relevant skills to meet the thriving tech companies hiring needs

Rather than blindly speculating you should give us some reasons why this downturn that everybody is expecting should happen
I hear everybody saying it is coming but this won't be the first or the last time when we hear that the end of the world is coming.
There is catastrophic financial storms -there is no doubt about this - but so far, very few who predicted them did not do it in a way that a broken clock would show the precise time twice per day
A statement that you can seriously take into consideration should list some seriously supported arguments. Just point us to whatever is coming

Otherwise of course I can "certainly" say that Cisco will end bad, the Nortel curse is going to get them

Op is right. I also know several folks from other companies who are still looking,. some have taken temporary low paying contract jobs. That said some jobs are out there if you have the skills and connections. For most people in this economy take a break if you can and apply after a year. You will save so much of heartache

250,000 is the current projection for fall layoffs across all sectors. It will be a massive downturn with ripple affects. ubereats, amazon orders will dry up too, impacting low income earners. tiktok vids won’t save you in an alternative economy either. buckle up buttercup.

If it happens at that scale this won't impact IT only, it is going to be a serious recession and there is nothing you can do.
I still don't see that is the books and I do not think that the Cisco spasms we are seeing today are related to an overall downturn, it is just sheer Cisco internal incompetence
