Thread regarding Ford layoffs

Buckle up Model e

It’s coming to Ford soon…

From today’s Detroit News:
General Motors Co. is laying off more than 1,000 salaried employees in its software and services division globally, according to a source familiar with the matter, including about 600 employees working at its Global Technical Center in Warren.

In a statement, GM spokesperson Kevin Kelly said as the company builds its future it "must simplify for speed and excellence, make bold choices, and prioritize the investments that will have the greatest impact. As a result, we’re reducing certain teams within the Software and Services organization. We are grateful to those who helped establish a strong foundation that positions GM to lead moving forward."

Outside of the Warren operation, where GM employs more than 20,000, affected employees also work in California, Austin, Texas, Canada and elsewhere.

Been a long time since I wrote code, but from what I recall whacking coders mid stream usually ends badly. It's tough on the survivors and the beta testing window usually doubles. At least if you don't want buggy software. Good luck everybody.

Have you ever used the ford powertrain plant applications?
FIS & QLSCM are a complete embarrassment. QLSCM is the worst. It’s obvious that that application was written by people that don’t have a clue about manufacturing.

Plant application software development should be outsourced to somebody that knows what they’re doing or some organization.

The application for finding spare parts in the crib is also pathetic. I can find a carburetter gasket on a 20 year old snowblower quicker on Amazon and I can find a battery in the plant application.

This makes sense, many of the software pieces we have been working on are, or soon will be, available for development and purchase from our tier 1 suppliers. Why should we spend money on developing this stuff here when they can get better economies of scale and don't have the political problem of employing people onshore.

Simplify for speed and excellence? LOL, bold choices, that help lead - to where? Looks like a lot of bold choices didn't turn out so good.
