Still not used to the office

I still don’t feel at ease in office. I thought I will get used to it but nope , still hate it . Every time I do something, I feel like I am being watched . I hate people keeping tab on each other , what they wear, when do they go to the bathroom, go for a walk , get lunch etc . I dread getting up early and being there. I am constantly tired . I really want to find a remote job. I know it sounds a bit entitled but I gain nothing from coming to office .

I think it's important to center on the FAQ in times like these.

"The intent of our approach to in-person work is to drive greater collaboration and interaction with colleagues."

Note the absence of things like greater efficiency in performing day to day tasks, greater productivity, etc. These are apparently lower priority now.

For those of us unable to leverage collaboration or interaction while forced in, we are in a hopeless position. Not sure what to do next.

“Less and less in the office every week. Is FOW working and people actually quitting?”

Probably just folks taking summer vacations.

It's not entitled, it's human. Fluorescent lighting, dress codes, inconsiderate and/or judgmental coworkers, the commute, the extra expenses from driving and meals and work clothes, the annoying meetings that are harder to duck out, the overall depressing sterility of the typical office, it goes on and on.

Unless you're fresh out of school, it's weird to like working full-time in an office.

Yep. That's one of the clawbacks I made after forced return to office. No working any extra. No popping on in the evening to knock off a few tasks, no weekend work. So dang concerned about 3 full days in office so I provide that and nothing else.

Stuff is really falling behind and I couldn't care less.

I have been a developer as well as a manager and I can totally see why there might be difference in perceptions about FoW . As a manager, it is sort of my job to be more social and network and I move around a lot. But as a developer , one needs to get the “flow” state. It isn’t easy with so many distractions during the day. There are meetings, people coming to say Hi , people walking around . I was much comfortable doing my coding in my home and it made me work more efficiently. I could get a cup of coffee anytime I want, go for a walk and cool off a bit. Sometimes my brain doesn’t work at 3 , so I used to take a break and do a quick exercise or run some errands. My brain was most effective at 5-7 and that was my prime time to finish my work. That’s what the HR and most managers don’t understand. Everyone doesn’t work the same way. It’s sort of easy as a manager to log off at 5 but most developers work at night as there are too many distractions during the day and they need to finish the work during the sprint.

@3yuw+1tx5VI49, it’s hard to know the real numbers. But I am sure they are not stellar. It’s a matter of time when DC does something about this . Otherwise this policy is a joke. Specially for people who are trying to be sincere about it.

Honestly I don't have time to keep track of who is going to the bathroom when. Anyone else who does, doesn't have enough real work to do. I wouldn't worry about "the lookers" if I were you. If you are meeting your commitments and getting things done, don't worry about the rest.

Wish they went back to 2 days at your will days.

They did this and no one complied and now here we are.

I can fully relate . It’s one thing to come and meet your team sometimes or for few hours and another thing to feel like you are literally cornered in your desk .
Well happy for those who left this matrix and doing other things . Rest of us need to suffer till we wake up from our deep slumber.

I’m really sorry to hear you are struggling; this is the natural response to being forced into an unnatural environment. There is nothing healthy about being in an office space for 8 hours a day.

Having tasted the benefits of WFH, one will never like being in office at company’s will. Wish they went back to 2 days at your will days. Would be so much better!
