Thread regarding Anthem Inc. layoffs

Question for directors or HR

I'm a manager, and I will be laying people off on 8/8 (not by choice). I have a meeting scheduled with my director the day after. She never schedules meetings for Fridays.

When a manager is also being laid off, does it happen the same day they notify their direct reports, or the day after?

Typically all happens on the same day and yes there have been people leaders who have had to RIF their employees only to wind up on a call with their boss and HR an hour later to have it done to themselves. Nice right?

I think business unit and manager discretion play into the exceeds factor. Before coming to this company I was a top producer, I earned “exceeds” always got top increases and bonuses. I worked hard and was rewarded. I absolutely regret accepting the offer and coming here. I was told that I was lucky to get a meets my first year and was given a 2% increase. I’ve never been able to get an exceeds or a living wage increase since I’ve been here. And after a few years of putting in my absolute best, I’m done. Even if I survive 8/8 it’s been inferred that only in special cases remote workers can move up.

Have to call BS on those saying they “only ever received “exceeds expectations””

Give me a break. I know how it works and you’d have to be a phenomenon. I’ve been here 13 years, have been promoted 3 times and have only received 1 exceeds and that was a year after I basically called my boss out on the fact that I was always 1 tenth of a point from getting it each year.

I later learned that they really only can give out one or two to their pets and the rest of us, even those who are high performers have to content ourselves with a “meets” most of the time.

If I understand what others have written here. It’s just supplemental pay and it comes with strings like checking in on a weekly basis with them. This is my first time hearing this, I’m used to just signing a separation agreement and getting a check and starting unemployment after it runs out. Legally, from what I understand you have a few weeks legally to sign if you are over 40.

My manager and director were RIF'd in October 2023. They were both given 30 days...it was not immediate for either.

After the mgr/HR call informing you you’re rifd, does HR send you an email afterwards formally telling you in writing? Thanks

The meeting you have with your manager is to make sure you are ok after having delivered the good news to you reports.

So over a decade ago I helped fill out the RIF forms for my director. On RIF day the director was RIF'd earlier in the day and it was immediate. Came back next day to clean the desk out and leave. Later in the day I was called into HR and handed my paperwork, and 30 day notice. I knew I was going, I'd been forewarned and was already interviewing. The director was a surprise. The next week I was called on to help with a second round of RIFs and more paperwork. I found another position before the 30 days was up. That whole process taught me some valuable lessons, often its comes down to a certain $ amount being met, and being told to give more names. At that point it comes down to bare basics of a functioning department when you choose. I know this doesn't make you feel any better. So my advice to you is the same I say to everyone- Keep your head down and focus on the daily work, be helpful to your superiors and don't get caught too much in the RIF anxiety. The die is cast as you know, no point to worry. But if you do survive 8/8, maximize the 401k & Stock and go back to school.. a 1st or 2nd Masters will never go to waste and let Anthem pay for it. If I'm RIF'd next month, I exit with 4 degrees they paid for over the course of my career and the initial stock gift they gave everyone on IPO day that has multiplied nicely as a parting gift.

Manager layoffs are always immediate. I have never seen managers being given a notice. Shows how much trust the company has on line managers.

Welcome to what it feels like to be part of the unwashed masses. I'm honestly not trying to be rude and I sincerely hope you are not on the block. If your meeting is on a Friday, chances are you are safe...... at least for now. My guess is either there is a bit of a reorg going on, and you're still safe, or it is a "genuine" check in after you've had a moment to process the carnage. If you want to keep your job going forward, my suggestion is to "say the right words" so they think you are ok with everything. If you've made it to management and you want to stay there, you know what those words are. Stay strong and we're here if you need us.

As far as exceeds expectations, I’ve been rated as that since I’ve been here yet I do not feel safe here ever. I don’t think anyone is safe. There are so many lies & games in my department it’s sickening. I try to come in & work & only communicate if I absolutely have to with anyone. I’m miserable and looking for another job everyday. I can’t transfer within the company because I live more than 50 miles from a Pulse Point so that’s not an option.

"I have a meeting scheduled with my director the day after. She never schedules meetings for Fridays."

Perhaps it is just due to the situation. You most likely are safe and your manager may be letting others go and just wants to check in after what will be a very rough day.

Be on the lookout for your own 1:1 later in the day. If you make ith through the day you are probably safe.

Also wondering about this. If I am the manager scheduled to hold the conversations with impacted employees on 8/8 when would I know if I’m also on the list? This whole experience is causing such mental anguish because I don’t want to see anyone go through this :( I know this happens all the time but it’s my first time having to deliver this news to someone. I am sick over it.

Interesting, I do not know anyone that gets "exceeds expectations". You got to walk on water to get a 4 or 5 rating.

I had 10 years straight of only 'Exceeds expectations' reviews. I got along with people and was known as a hard worker and team player. I was RIF'd anyhow.
One big strike against me was my department was reorganized 2 years in a row. The new manager did not know or care about my decade of hard work and accomplishments. So having good performance reviews should help but is no guarantee.

Last batch of RIFS, my immediate manager and director were given their notice prior to their teams but on the same day.

Sure do.
Years ago, Sr IT Manager, got whacked with both meeting and exceeded reviews.
You just never know.

I’m a manager and the buzz is they will “optimize or consolidate”managers
on our team. This will include 1-2 of us getting RIFFED the buzz is it would be me
Do they RIF employees that received an exceed expectations and has no disciplinary actions compared to peers that didn’t review as high and have had disciplinary actions

As a manager (but not HR) I think that is a good guess. After you RIF a portion of your team you will be learning about some new role in the company, with your old team being folded into another team. If you are being RIF'd your meeting should still be Thursday. If your new role is something good you will get hints ahead of time. If new role is less good than your current role, you have that waiting for you as your surprise on Friday.

As a manager, you should know HR won't tell you, especially on this forum. I used to be a manager, that could be I've heard of that, but also heard offered a different position like and independent contributor .. best of luck. Come back here a let us know. We're a good group of people. Blessings..
