Severance and Job searching

If you’re married to a supportive spouse who also provides the major source of income (in other words, some of the RIF stress is smoothed out), is it better to wait for a possible RIF then apply for other jobs immediately or wait till the severance almost runs out after RIF then look…

@des+1tsDrpKo They do…
And if you make the least bit of a disturbance complaining about getting RIFed they will get you TF outta there.
They want to spring a RIF on you out of left field THEN expect you to work for 30 days and be happy/rah rah/yayyyyyyy about it. Be a damn cheerleader because you took my livelihood away??? It’s ludicrous.

If I’m RIFd I will have enough PTO to take half of that month off. The other two weeks will be spent getting my resume ready and doing the bare minimum to ensure I get my supplemental pay for 6 months.

So what would entice us to work another month if being told we were let go? Supplemental pay isn’t a big deal, especially for us who haven’t been here too long. They are really going to expect you to work another month and pretend nothing has happened? Why would you want someone you just fired to keep working and tell other people they were laid off.

I would hit the bricks running but with unemployment + supplemental you might be able to be choosy about offers received in the beginning. First op might not align. You might end up in a frying-pan into the fire scenario. What's being offered isn't severance. It's supplemental. State unemployment pays first then supplemental kicks in second to equal pay for a time period based on time span of employment with A/E. Once you're re-employed both stop.

Many companies pause hiring in the fourth quarter of the year. So if you don't plan on looking for a job in Q3 2024, you will need to anticipate a Q2 2025 start date for a new position. Excluding things like holiday hours at TJ Maxx or some other part time seasonal work.

It's better to look sooner than later. It might take some time to secure a new job, unless you can make due once severance runs out.
