Internal transfer process?

Applied to a job internally, someone reached out to me for more background info. Sent it, and later saw in Workday that I went from under review to not selected.

Am I supposed to receive a rejection email in this case? Should I follow-up with the person for closure?

You’re like the victim of the “equal opportunity employment” trick that has been played by US companies for decades.

What happens is that a manger hand-picks who he wants, often a buddy, and then posts the position within the company for several weeks in order to meet the “equal opportunity” requirement. Often the posted position is deliberately written such that the job requirements match identically with the skill set of the manager’s choice. This way, if anyone complains later on, the hiring manager can “prove” that the hand-picked guy best met the job requirements.

It’s unfair and corrupt, but it happens a lot.

Find internal policy (circuit) Mostly you are allowed to transfer after spending xx mo in current position. Actual manager can't block it. When accepted, both managers can only agree the transition schedule. (Also this step is described)

Not to officially block. But a lot do deal offline outside the hiring tool.
All Orgs/Departments in Ireland site had this unoffical agreement in place.
I left a few months ago after 1 hiring DM told me this, its when I realised I couldn't move internally, so I got out instead.

How would a manager block their direct reports internal job transfer? Do they actually have authority over something like that?

Related question....what is the recommendation after you apply? Do you send the hiring manager an email expressing interest or don't bother. I also applied for a few I am 100% qualified for recently. Got no bites so I assumed hiring manager had someone picked out already

Setup a 1:1 with hiring manager and tell him you would like to get the feedback so that you can improve and do better next time. Advantage of applying internally is that you might actually get some feedback

@tbs Nailed it. Applied for internal positions that I was 100% qualified for and was never selected. In the end it went to a friend of the manager.

Only follow-up if you want to get more information as to why you weren't selected. You may or may not get a useful response.

The typical response is "we found someone who was a better fit", or something like that.

Personally, I'd just move on.
