Josh Berson - UKG 14% Reduction In Force: A Growth Move That Makes Sense

https://joshbersin.com/2024/07/ukg-14-reduction-in-force-a-growth-move-that-makes-sense/

"Why would they do this? Is this a sign of a slowdown?

According to CEO Chris Todd the answer is no. Rather, the company wants to double down on its investments in AI (they believe that AI will transform their market), customer success, branding (advertising), and mid-market/SMB. They want to spend more money on marketing, advertising, AI platforms, and customer support."

AI?!? You mean those LLMs that think that you can top a pizza with glue?!?

Tech had better wake up from this pipe dream. The kind of “AI” that can replace a software developer or similar doesn’t exist. Yet. Pretending that it does won’t make it so.

Who referred to them as squatters? These were some of the most engaged and productive people on my team!

If this layoff is an investment in AI, why is HR leadership referring to those laid off as disengaged squatters? Are we thinning the ranks to get to rule of 40 or are we investing in AI? Sounds like leadership needs to get story straight

So AI is UKG future, prepare for another of job slashings, maybe not this year, possibly next year, definitely in two years, mark my words. I saw this coming since the merger, would have been a surprise if UKG didn't follow other companies, this is all preparation to go public

UKG'S AI investments will not equate reducing the 14% in employees. It's a blatant excuse to get to rule of 40.

Developers at UKG have not seen development efficiency by using AI. The few AI experiences created so far have not gone GA and do not provide enough value to get PEPM from customers.

Private equity and executive leadership are driving UKG down.

Hugo has told marketers to their faces that he thinks AI is a satisfactory substitute. Guess we'll see.

How ironic. The simple concept of investing in AI eliminates jobs.
