How exactly do you find out you’re part of the RIF? Do you get a meeting I vote for the following day so you sit in dread for 24 hours? An unexpected teams message from your manager asking to talk? How does it all work? Who are you speaking to through all of this?

If it was requested and approved beforehand it should still be fine. If it is after wards, that depends on the kind of manager you have.
Planned PTO. What happens when you have planned and approved PTO during the 30 day window after notification of RIF?
What everyone else said.
Also, people get really mad when the call is impersonal, but it's designed to be. They are sternly warned to not use words like "I'm sorry" or "I didn't want to do this" or "if there's ever an opening, you'll have a place on my team," or anything like that.
It's an unexpected 1:1 with your boss, with HR secretly teed up to join. "Due to blah blah, your position is being eliminated effective (date). Feel free to take the afternoon and tomorrow off. Oh, by the way, don't tell anyone. Cheers!"
I had my email and company intranet shut off immediately after the AM HR meeting. It was brutal because I didnt get to say goodbye to my colleagues of >15 years. And I didn't have a copy of my resume on my personal laptop (obviously a stupid error on my part). I just didn't expect it because I had always gotten good reviews and my year had gone well (as far as I knew).
You’ll receive a meeting invite from your manager for 30 minute meeting. I received my email just a few hours before meeting time.
When you sign on for the meeting, it is only your manager and an HR representative. Your manager reads a script and says your position has been eliminated and then HR rep tells you when your last day will be and you’ll be contacted the following week to attend a meeting with others who also had their positions eliminated.
Whole thing took about five minutes and then they give you Friday off out of the goodness of their hearts and then you’re expected to come back and work for 30 days like nothing has happened. 😬
Meeting invite with a "DO NOT FORWARD" in the subject. This either means you are safe or you are out. You'll know if you're safe because you would have likely heard about others being laid off that day already and a good portion of your colleagues suddenly dropping offline with out of office messages at around 10am. An email would then be sent out later in the day from Gail with news of upper leadership being shuffled around and someone deciding to "retire". Absolutely no one from executive leadership will ever even make mention of the layoffs. The next quarter the company will be hit with massive fines and/or liquidated damages for missing contractual obligations due to lack of staff and from reduced output from the remaining staff who no longer care.
You will receive a fax at your home. It will say, u been Rrrrrrrrifed.
You’ll get a meeting invite from your mgr. When you join the call an HR rep will also be on. If your mgr is also being riffed (same day) the meeting invite will come from the next level up. HR will do most of the talking.
