Thread regarding Anthem Inc. layoffs

Grasping for hope

Has anyone worked here for several years now and think the RIF talk is all just a possibility? Like maybe you’ve heard this all before? Do you foresee another possible 10 years with Elevance possibly?

I've survived here somehow for over ten years, but the deeper the cuts get, the clearer it is the best I can reasonably hope for is six months at a time.

I'm not even sure I'll survive August, but if I do, I won't be sure I'll survive Q1 2025. I'd have jumped ship between the last one and now, but I don't have the energy to look for a new job and deal with the same bullsh-t somewhere else (and I've been in the game long enough to know it's the same everywhere else, at least everywhere else that would get me within shouting distance of my salary and PTO), so I'm hanging around until my hand is forced.

I expect that ten years from now, the company will be 80% turned over. He-l, there are some arms of the org that have turned over 80% just in the past five years.

I, like the others who have posted am in the >20 club. I've seen hiring frosts, freezes, no OT , and RIFs- some mild, some extreme like this past October.
Last month everyone in my department was asked to fill out exactly what we do and the amount of hours per month. Not my (our) first rodeo, we all have spreadsheets saved with that information and a formula to figure the time out. This is a classic RIF procedure to figure out who you can get rid of. I've been apart of this so many times, i know my number will come up sooner or later - again. I was RIF'd once over a decade ago, I found another position before the grim HReaper came. So my point it this, the die is cast. Management already knows who's in the RIF, there is no point worrying yourself about it at this point. They do target higher salaries which tend to be older people. Knowing my area is in a RIF target area i've updated my resume, looked at the job boards, and made usure i used every last dollar of tuition reimbursement $. If my time is up, then I leave with 4 degrees that Anthem paid for, the last being finished this month. One of my coworkers decided to retire soon, so i'm hoping that will feed the Grim HReaper the soul it wants, but i'm not worrying about it... I just do my work, keep my head down and be helpful.... that's really all you can do.
So my advice, if you survive next month make a point to go back to school and let them pay for your degree. Make sure you leave no benefit unused, tuition, 401k matches, co stock, etc... use them for every dollar you can get... as surely they use us for everything they can get.

I have been here for over 20 years and this has happened in the past, including RIF's, offshoring, hiring freezes and OT freezes. Some of the rounds of layoffs were really brutal and involved a lot of people. I survived, many of the people I have known did not and it had little to do with job performance.
The current RIF's are real, this is not a drill. I don't see another 10 years for me or the people in my immediate department but that is based on the work we do. It's more dependent on where you are and what you do in terms of "immediate" threats.
This has all happened before and it will happen again. Some will survive, others will not.

@1bax+1tpNy2kb. Who knows....maybe you aren't really at risk....the whole company isn't going to be RIF'd after all. However, if someone does feel at risk ... for example manager is acting strange or you are getting requests to document things extensively.... get yourself ready NOW. Get your resume out there now. It is so much easier to get a new job when you have a job, compared to looking for a job as an unemployed person.

I've been around a while and have never seen it like this. With "moving" people and entire departments to other companies, along with automation, the frequency will only increase.

17 years and i got RIFd 2 weeks ago! It is what it is. They fired a VP last year and brought in a COO from united to f' Florida business up! He's focusing on AFC companies for a year now. When the star ratings fall he will be gone in 2025! hahaha! KARMA is a bi--h dude! 🤣

It’s a for sure thing. Managers are communicating to their employees that it is coming. They just don’t know how big. They are targeting all departments it seems.

Have the folks impacted by the 8/8 RIF already been informed or will they be informed on 8/8?

If I make it past 8/8 then I will immediately start looking for new opportunities outside of this company. It’s a sinking ship under the current regime. Lots of bad decisions being made that are negatively impacting members and causing groups to leave for other insurers. RIFs are a new way of life for those that stay. Gail’s sole purpose is to increase shareholder values and the only way she knows how to do this is by using RIFs and outsourcing work.

The 8/8 RIF is a sure thing.

It seems that the best hope would be to get out of the company. I agree with the point about the exceptions/permissions required to move. Who comes up with these ideas?

Well the RIFs have been happening for several months, you can't deny that. There are some reputable posters indicating this will expand and continue. The draconian edict of trying to have you "get their permission" to move to a specific location smacks of feudalism and slavery. We are not their property. Gail is evil. No wonder Pat McIntyre left so quickly when she got here. Plus don't forget she hired that hitman from Nike. Several hundred Nike employees posted against him. Nuff said.

I don't know, I've been around a while, and I've seen hiring freezes from time to time but never seen bans on OT and stuff like that. I think they are coming just not sure to what scale.
