Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

Is Intel Right?

Insisting that we need our own fabs?
Our competitors dwarf us now and they are fabless. TSMC is closing in on 1 trillion dollars market cap.

Why does Intel insist that everyone is wrong expect themselves? The fabless trend has grown exponentially for the past 30 years.

The arrogance has ki-led this once great company.

The US needs to have semiconductor company with reasonably current fabs and process technology but it doesn't need 15 of them or whatever number would result if all construction went to completion. The government would prop up a portion of Intel. Stop the expansion, idle the fabs outside the US, focus on fixing the process technology issues, and right size the workforce (subtract 45K). IFS will never get a whale unless Intel regains the process technology lead and maintains it. Bringing up a new supplier is a lot of effort and risk why would these companies gamble on Intel with the history of not delivering on time and having belligerent people. Oh ya, put a gag order on the CEO. Jensen never talked sm--k about the competition while growing his company to be the new leader by a huge margin and still doesn't.

ifs is a supplier without anyone asking to be supplied. the 'whales' all seem to be perfectly happy with samsung and tsmc making their parts. nobody asked intel to make them parts except maybe a few minnows. intel is a dead man walking, somebody just needs to put it out of its misery. has been for a long time. running on hope and nostalgia while it burns every dollar the govt and private equity gives them. the end is near.

Intel solves problems that don't exist. Products should solve problems, so intel will lose. Intel is gonna end up like SK hynix - a zombie company propped up by the government.

This sounds really grim for Intel. The company is getting beaten up by competitors on all fronts. I have doubts whether Intel will be in business even 2-3 years from now. There will be layoffs at Intel this year, we all know that.

The job market in IT is super competitive right now because a lot of people are looking for work. Include all of the Indian H1Bs and you have a saturated job market.

No customers for 18A.
It’s pretty grim.

At what node will Intel finally throw in the towel?

The fabs are where all the money is being sunk into… and that side of the business has been propped up by internal chip sales for a decade. As the competition eats away at the chip sales, and foundry struggles to get off the runway, it becomes a race against time… like an oncoming mountain at the end of that runway… can INTC clear it in time before cash runs out? Looks less and less likely as time moves along…

When was the last time Intel was right on anything?

@npl is right. Fabs have to become US National Labs. Specialized for producing US national security hardware. Everyone else can go to Taiwan.

@kka, some would suggest that the fab has been holding Intel back.

They will actually be competitive on TSMC.

TSMC is lower cost than Intel’s internal fabs as seen by the new transparent accounting. TSMC nodes are ahead of Intel’s nodes.

Give it up man. Join the 21st century and ditch the fabs to the US government.

You're joking right?
The fabs is the only thing left for intel.
Products are sh-t, can't compete even when made in tsmc.
It's best for intel to make products for competitors and ditch everything currently on intels portfolio.

It's the Indians that add to this arrogance. Their culture has become a cancer for Intel

Yes and no.
Does Intel need them for their products - No
Does the US need the fabs - Yes, as proven by Covid.

Intel is going the right direction for the wrong reasons. Until the fabs are split off from the mothership, full investor (and national) value will not be unlocked. Last I heard from a director, Pastor P. has not had the come-to-jesus moment yet about what needs to happen.

It will happen, just don't know how much damage will be done until then.

Intel could have been right if prioritize volume in ACT of cognitive dissonance it did not because it did not consider ARM as “volume" as ELT careers were made on “margin” which by the way is an artificial construct of “pricing”

Monumental Influentials!
