Joe was ying and yang. He had the side he wanted people to see and then there was the real Joe. The Joe who systematically hired executives from big banks and Wall Street firms during the 2008 financial crisis. He literally hired the people that created the financial crisis, and slowly started to push the USAA execs out. He’s the reason we’re in this mess now. Those execs, hired their friends, who hired their friends, who hired their friends… etc. Now USAA is run by greedy, self serving executives with no military background. Joe’s grow, grow, grow mentality is the reason the bank has been in trouble for years now with the regulators. Joe laid off more people than Davis, but he did it quietly and required signed NDAs to receive severance. But most notably, Joe mentored and set Wayne (and Stuart) up to become the next CEO.

If you think Joe was God’s gift to USAA, you enjoy being lied to and lack critical thinking skills. .

And yet, Joe Robles was correct about global warming. Then the narrative changed to climate change. The data is cooked; the only constant is change. If you believe the same people who told you that the shot worked and you wouldn't get covid and climate change is an immediate threat, you deserve another booster. Good luck out there, comrad!

Work was good when he was CEO but how much of that was external conditions and/or ignoring the problems so the next guy could take responsibility.

I will never forget him denying climate change from the podium of an employee meeting. Not a smart stance for the CEO of an insurance company.

Yes he was literally an American hero and my condolences to all affected by his loss and while Joe was a breath of fresh air from the prior CEO Davis, I feel he is given too much credit.. He wasn’t as kind as some of you remember. If you were on mahogany row and behind doors where no one was watching, he wasn’t nice unless you were in his circle. Him opening up the eligibility and growing the bank too fast is the reason that we ended up in a sh*t show with the OCC and have been dealing with those repercussions so many years after he was long gone. And on his way out, he stopped a lot of things like the kids Christmas party, and other stuff but so that it wouldn’t tarnish his legacy, he let Stuart be the fall guy. I think he came in and did what he needed to do which was improve employee morale but please stop painting him the hero of USAA. Great leader, American Hero, but also human.

Easily the best CEO while I was a USAA. Everyone after him has been horrific. RIP, Joe.
