From what I hear, people have been affected across the board. I can’t figure out the logic. It’s just nasty.

Absolutely the most unprofessional and disrespectful way to handle a layoff. 'Our purpose is People' is the company motto yet, you lay off your staff via a generic email? Such Cowardly leadership, or lack of.
Terrible what happened
In the IT department atleast, the heads laid off everyone who wasn't part of their inner circle. The department has a group of long-time employees, mostly older white nearing retirement, who earn three times more than a typical employee. If each of these high-paid individuals had been laid off, it could have saved the jobs of three regular employees. If your head is from ulti, Kronos or new folks are laid off. So there is no logic to it.
