Thread regarding HCSC (Health Care Service Corporation) layoffs

The PTO Math

Folks, the source of this change is here https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&opi=89978449&url=https://www.chicago.gov/content/dam/city/depts/bacp/OSL/PLPS%2520One%2520Pager.pdf&ved=2ahUKEwjM7vv7z4qHAxWpiO4BHYm1ApAQFnoECCAQAQ&usg=AOvVaw20aUGyhnV95i2lTDaP4-R3

The city of Chicago put in place a new ordinance with a July 1st effective date. HCSC seemed to jump at the chance to use this ordinance to take away benefits.

What is the math on the 2 days a year of PTO lost? roughly $35-40M savings a year for HCSC. Rough math suggest HCSC is carrying $25M-50M on the books for PTO, so forcing people to only carry 2 days of PTO will further reduce HCSC obligations in 2025 for a layoff. So annual savings is $40M+ and 1 time burn down $25M - $50M. This was clearly done to benefit the company.

To be clear, HCSC is stealing from you. You have an agreement with them. For x$ and y PTO you agree to work for them. Now they are expecting you to give up 28% (2 days) of your sick days, which is reducing your benefit for working for them.

I've been with HCSC for 2.5 years. My resume is getting updated and I am looking for a new job even though I've been told I'm on a path for a major promotion. I've been sc--wed twice by HR since joining HCSC and frankly I don't trust HCSC's HR team.

Lastly, who the he-l approved this communication? You don't just take away something and not explain WHY. I assume this is because there was no good way to spin the theft of benefits.

What was the PTO policy before this change? Was there separate sick days in addition to PTO days?

You are correct the company has the right to do as it wishes. Why take the blue pulse survey, do you really this a company as corrupt as HCSC gives the actual results from that survey? THE COMANY HAS THE RIGHT TO DO AS IT WISHES, FALISFY THE SURVEY RESULTS. How do you line those CAPS?

I am actually ok with people leaving the company if they talk in all caps and use that much punctuation.

As much as you hate the change, the company has the right to do as it wishes. It su-ks but they can. If you do not like it, it may be time to find a new role. I know that’s not always easy, but you have to take care of yourself. The company isn’t here to take care of us. This isn’t the 1930s. Go to a place where you have better conditions and more time off.

Thanks for absolutely nothing, Chicago. Texas should've seceded long ago to save our PTO.

How many saw BCBS IL being a title sponsor for the nascar race in Chicago this weekend?

How many millions was spent on the race last year and this year? McDonald makes sense, national foot print and local company. BCBS IL makes no sense.

Let’s talk ethics, we are told this is a global recognized company for their ethics. How ethical is it to steal PTO from your employees?

Communication is forth coming. No news if it will: 1) be tough su-k it up OR 2) fall on the sword.

If every employer in Chicago took this ordinance at face value and implemented similar changes the uproar would be huge. Clearly there was a different path that all other employers took.

Expectations are low
