Thread regarding Capital One layoffs

CODA program thoughts

Got an offer for the program but saw all the news about layoffs/stack ranking/ culture. Should I go for it or take another offer I have. I would be moving to Richmond and am worried about layoffs

Have an immediate backup plan. You never know at C1 if the one wrong person is jealous of you. It could be anyone at any time. IT IS VERY TOXIC. Managers come and go from dept to dept. It's only takes one person if they are having a bad day to ruin your time at C1 for good. Its High School. I mean middle school mentality in adult bodies. It's the worst thing I've ever seen. It's so hard to work there and it's not job. Most are fairly easy. It's a nightmare on wheels. I live the specific job I was hired to do. It's the games people play.

Probably not the best advice. As you are a CODA, take the job , learn AWS, pad the resume for next gig and run. I would say 1 year and then you will be in this rank and yank mess.

If you’re a CODA applicant I assume you’re starting your SWE career and dont have a CS degree.

In this job market you would be insane not to take the offer to get paid for skills that you have no professional or educational experience in.

If you lived in Richmond, i wouls say take it and keep looking. But i wouldn’t move to Richmond for a job at Capital One.

If i was you, i would stay away from Capital One unless you want to add 10 to 20 years to your age rapidity. Capital one is a very stressful and toxic environment. If you have other offers, take them.

I think you could take the offer, rack up experience and paychecks and then in 3 years shop for new opps or roll the dice and see if you can stay on the C1 rodeo bull!

I lasted 18.5 years and then with one bad PM cycle, I was shot out of the Banking for Good cannon! I will say as a DE, my severance and total payout was not too bad even though they were really just laying folks off! C1 can be great but it can be insanely stressful to manage through their performance management crud.

Take a chance! Richmond is laid back, easy on traffic, we have a lot here to appreciate and it’s still close to Beach, mountains, Nova, NC!

The company reorganizes too much to pick up and move your life to another state. You will be busy hoping from department to department to survive.

5 years ago I would’ve said go for it but they aren’t the same company now. They don’t care about their people and the culture is completely toxic now. Run!
