Thread regarding Cigna layoffs

50 Mile Radius?

Does anyone know of an employee who lives within a 50 mile radius of an office "as the crow flies" but for driving distance it's more than 50 miles? Sometimes the difference is 10+ miles. Are those people really still forced to come in? Has anyone tried to make this argument to management?

By the way, I found this website where you can calculate the straight-line distance and driving distance. I'm not exactly sure how Cigna is calculating, but my guess is something similar.

Unfortunately the policy assigned everyone based on a “crow’s fly distance”. They realized after the fact. If it is in excess of 50 miles commuting, you will get approved to WFH, it might just take a bit to get through the tape but stick with it. They want to, and will reverse these situations. I know there were a number of folks around the Great Lakes that were improperly mapped to offices due to this.

I know someone who lives closer to an office than I do but is still wfh. Make that make sense.

I know of someone who was 48 miles in a straight line but had a 58 mile drive that had to fight for months to get approval to stay WAH. I also know of a person with no health or other issues who easily got an exception and is still WAH. It is arbitrary and unfair and no matter how much they try to make it “reasonable” the only reasonable thing is to let us WAH unless we have a job that requires in office or other people from our team are here.

OP again -- actually I'm revisiting the FOW page and it looks like they've updated the term to "reasonable commuting distance" of 50 miles-- which by definition would be driving distance (or train/bus), NOT straight-line distance.

Still, I'm curious whether anyone has had any trouble with this distance stuff?
