Take a hard look at where you are. There are tons of factors against people trying to get into the workforce. They are the same questions no one talks about putting you in a layoff...
Are you a white male in a tech company?
Were you born in the mid 70s or earlier?
Are you not part of a legally protected group?

If you answered yes to any of those, your odds of landing jobs go down significantly. Each yes adds another magnitude. No yes, 1:100 chance. 1 Yes 1:1000 chance. 2 Yes 1:10,000 chance. Everyone will say no, but these are simple facts. The only place this may not occur is a government job. At least then you are not competing with H1Bs at a 25% pay reduction.

Its not a good time to be out of work. Depending on where you are it may be better. But looking for 6-figure incomes is not easy when you have people that can do the work asking for $75k. So, you have to weigh the reality of lower pay with getting a job. Also you can look at other industries where work is more stable and no layoffs. Believe it or not some municipalities pay is rather good and includes a pension. Cost of benefits are cheaper so you have that.

I was in the last LR. Took me about a month to get a new finance job at 15 percent less. Good news is this company is the opposite of Ciscos management style.

I would expect a tough time, especially to the election time and if the current regime steals things again..you are in big trouble cause the depression on the horizon will begin.

Having Cisco on your resume is a detriment, not an advantage, in pursuing similar tech roles.

This is a really bad time for software folks. There are pretty much no jobs out there and the ones that are there can be very choosy to get a candidate that checks all the boxes. I know high performing engineers who have been unable to find work for almost a year and no light at the end of the tunnel. Make sure you have some cash stashed away to pay your bills while you search.

I finally left after staying for way too long. Based on the experiences I was hearing from folks, I was really nervous to start looking, but the search wasn’t as bad as expected. It took just under 2 months to land the new job, and it did come with a pay raise. Just be prepared for many interview rounds. It seems like there’s a lot more hoops to jump through, but It’s not all doom and gloom out there, you got this!

I've been looking for months to get out and many job postings are just feelers. Data gathering for jobs that either don't exist or haven't been funded/approved. They're gathering valid candidates in the hopes their future budget will allow a hire. I've even had a few that actually put that in the ad.

Job market is great, if you are not looking for money. LR'd now for a few years. Always knew it would eventually happen. So prepared while at Cisco, for the inevitable. Now in late 50s, choose to work very simply; a part-time job just to have money to burn, and health insurance. I could go back to the tech industry, but why? Honestly could not be happier.

Biggest lesson I have learned: live frugally, within reason. Need what you want, want what you need. Buying crud will not make you happy. Living a minimalist lifestyle is not for everyone, but it feels like freedom. Getting away from chasing money and putting up with corporate baloney definitely changed my life. Spent way too long living a facade life.

Got a job as a greeter at Walmart. Took about two months to land it. Former high performer. I enjoy the camaraderie.

Regarding focus on work, the so called "leaders" in my team setup a tracking system. Engineers audit each other, few guys monitor your result. There is no room for losing focus. My guts feeling even not really need to LR engineer, the leader still kick out a couple engineers to show off his power.

Job market isn't too good right now. Jobs report said there were less jobs last quarter. The election is slowing things down until decisions are made (This is a neutral comment so don't come at me). Business and banks are holding on to their $$$ until someone wins the election.

If you don’t know people in the industry and are relying on Linked In or recruiters…you’re going to be in a tough spot.

It is very hard to focus, this is getting old time to start making some tough decisions.

Longtime Ex-cisco high performer customer facing, then somewhere else - cisco competitor mid-2021-early 2023 with non-R&S CCIE. Took me a pretty substantial time to find a job then - 6 months for a contract job with poor benefits and less pay. At the 10 month mark, I found a comparable-paying job with a Cisco competitor. I was not able to get back into Cisco despite having left on good terms with hundreds if not a thousand or more connections to work off of. Strange times for sure.

Why are you working? The couple of weeks before LR are to chill out. Nobody works.
