a lot of folks are working hard but not smart…look at the company holistically and where the good jobs are. Don’t go chasing after glorified titles where you have to do grunt work. Be selective in where you choose to go, which supervisors/managers to work for and which positions you aim for. Look around you and you will see which positions are desirable. work hard and smart.

Yes the normal people get transferred to the s hit jobs nobody wants. The hipos get the cream of the crop. The hipos get jobs with plenty of face time and exposure. We had a tour once and the section hipo talked about our process even though they knew nothing about it. We the workers just stood there silent. Most of the information they shared was generic and wrong. The manager congratulated the hipo and said they had done a wonderful job presenting. I was transfered to a position no one wanted. I work with the most vile people and corrupt site. I am not nor ever will be a hipo but I will be a retiree. I feel bad for the ones that are pushed out in the 40s.
It is not a buffet, you don't just look around and pick the s*t you like. Your manager comes to you, suggest there's an "opportunity", you know deep down it is a lateral move, but it will have more work load. So you turn it down, next thing you know, you are stuck in that same job with a sht rank for the next 5 years until your sup moves on.
Yes you have no control. you can either keep dropping, sustain or excel. You can work hard stay late and kiss a but unless they like you or sponsored you will fail. I wont do it mediocrity is my path. Only the top few percent can be hipos. Remember the bell curve and forced ranking. I have increased technology saved the company millions and only got a good ranking. Others that danced around for the managers received excellent rankings. Once you experience this it will demotivate you. I used to bring tools and supplies from home to help out but was reprimanded for doing this. I have bought supplies for exxon and not sought repayment. I have driven my personal vehicle to pick up parts and supplies without mileage reimbursement. None of this was appreciated by the company. I don t do this anymore because of fear and under appreciation. Even if they just said thanks or good job it would be nice. Instead they complain about it. I am quiet quitting. I use to wonder why the older workers just cruised to retirement and had such a bad taste from exxon. They were said to be just making their time. I understand now why they were and the way they acted. They told me it would happen to me and it did. So I am telling you younger people the same will happen to you. Hipos this does not apply to you. Be ready to leave at 55 or a bit older. Prepare and save your money, pay everything off.
Clearly you don't work at Exxon. You don't have the freedom to choose at Exxon. You are assigned roles. And this only happens if you are a HiPo.
