Plenty of people who were treated unfairly with an NI or NSI are doing quite well at other companies. Promoted to bigger roles and salaries. Happier.

If you have skills and doing good work, it’s them and not you. Don’t ever believe it’s career ending.

CareerConnect shows your assessment history since the day you were hired. I pointed out to HR once that if each year is a new leaf they shouldn’t store that data. They said it is used for salary treatment. So just know that if you are NSI your salary will never be as good as someone who never was.

Even if the official data is held only for 3 years, vindictive supervisors (that’s mostly the case ), hold on to this type of information for decades. Specially at refinery sites. You are better off leaving.

They know when they assign you nsi that you may choose to leave, and they don’t care…

I know a person who was piped 15 years earlier. The supervisor brought up the past pip at the next pip 15 years later. So there was a record of some sort. This was during the great purge layoff of 2018 or 2020. This persons pip haunted them for years. Throughout their career their ranking was always low. As a result they were paid significantly less than others with the same years. They were paid 40 k less than the rest of us. We all felt bad for this person. The person was a good worker and worked better than others in the group. It was not fair at all. This person was pushed out at 57 years of age while non deserving others kept working past 60. So yes a pip can have long lasting effects. 47

Manager here, they will have an impact on future assignments for 2-3 years depending on how you respond and recover. If you recover the next year, you’ll be given credit for fighting through it, and after 2 years, you should be mostly fully recovered. Some harda$$ managers might not want you after 2 years, but most won’t have access to that data. After 3 years, you shouldn’t see any issues. Salary treatments will be impacted (0%) for the next year, but can come up the following year if you get out of NSI.

I have seen PIP ed individuals come back up in the rankings. Long term implications affect ending CL and pay. If you are PIP ed at the end of your career who cares. Sc--w them. Most important is overall ranking. Once you are the downward path there is no hope. You will continue as NI and then to NSI. The hi fliers never drop no mater what. I know of one who boasted of 10 percent raises every year. Getting PIPed early is death sentence. Getting Piped at the end is normal and expected. Guaranteed PIPing for the majority. Lots of people got a CL promotion and large raise 2 to 3 years before being PIPed. It is exxon s way of paying you off to get rid of you. The pipees were told that they should have enough money in their 401k and pension to not have to work anymore. They were also told they were being greedy and needed to retire. They were told their skills were not needed or relevant anymore. I learned a lot from the ones before me.

If you receive a PIP and don’t leave, then management knows you accept their assessment that you are a low performer and then management knows they can always keep you there. You get no raises and still get to crank out base work until they want to send your job overseaes. Then they NSI you until you can only take the PIL. It is all a stealth layoff.

No hard and fast rule. So many variables that contribute to your career, ranking is just one variable, which, in my estimation, is of low weight.

Yes and no. I've seen Sr MPT professionals get piped at NRE stage and have an Executive mgr go to bat for them and they became Principal or Sr Principal Engineers. That is unusual but I've seen it happen. Mostly, one bottom bucket ranking and you are scroood.

From people that I have seen, once you are PIP'd or ranked lower it has impacted CL potential which has longer term salary implications and unless someone is advocating for you come potential settjng you are likely forever-handicapped.

My understanding is that performance data is only tracked for 3 years (and impacting salary /promotions for 2 years). Also based on how it is presented in various tools it doesn't seem likely it can display more.

However, not ruling out there are "admin" views with more data or that they track PIP separately.

Your performance is visible to the right individual going back between 7 to 10 years is my understanding.

Most issues generally roll of your personnel file except for letters regarding any in work place harassment.
