Thread regarding Anthem Inc. layoffs

How does it look out there?

I can imagine most of us intensified scouting for another job. I wouldn’t be as scared of coming layoffs if news and gossip are not as grim as they are. It seems to me that losing a job now can really be an issue. Very, very small percentage of us achieved a professional class that would make us always marketable. Vast majority of us are ordinary workers with certain skills and experience. It doesn’t look good for the workforce in general.

Everyone says it’s bad, but…

It’s way worse than you can imagine.
I’m a people leader (20 years total experience, 13 of those with Anthem). I’ve been applying to external positions for about a month in preparation for the inevitable. I’m not over-applying- I’m selecting positions for which I am fully qualified. After around 100 apps sent, I have heard NOTHING from anywhere. It’s scary.

I got RIF'd in October from the IT department. I've lost count of how many jobs I've applied for. When I couldn't even get an interview for anything IT related, I changed it up. First I started looking outside IT, then looking at anything that paid near my salary. Then started applying for anything that asked for a warm body. Even to work somewhere part time, there are so many hoops you have to jump through. There are scams, job postings that are not legit. I'm pretty sure I gave away a bunch of free work to companies who wanted a "sample "of my work tailored to certain specifications they provided. I've done surveys. I am currently working on becoming a substitute teacher and have had some interviews as a classroom aide. The world is desperate for teachers so I'm hopeful we need teacher's aides too and one of these will come through.

Never did I ever imagine I would still not have a job after 9 months. It is crazy and stressful and I highly recommend you freshen up your resume and start looking now. Even if you don't get cut, it's always a good idea to be prepared. Good luck to you and keep your fingers crossed for me!

If you are under 40, you need to get out of the health care industry as it will continue to spiral. Read an article within the past week that about 40% of hospitals have not recovered from pandemic.

The competition is brutal....even for clinicians.

It is really hard to get a job just by applying on-line. The HR departments are deluged with online applicants and it is next to impossible to make it through the filters and/or have a hiring manager actually review your application using Indeed or a service like that. It is more likely to get a job through a professional connection, former co-worker, etc.

Frankly it's been awful. I have been looking just to have something in the pipeline if I get RIFd. In the last several months ive applied for 400-500 apps from indeed, flex jobs, link and more and have had 2 interviews externally and 1 internal and thats it. Everything has been similar to what I do not and its all no thanks

Awful if you are a remote worker. I live in a rural area and have been working remote for the past 10 years. If I get RIFd I expect it to take time if I want the same or better salary remote.

Yes, I was RIF'ed at another company and landed here with a job that pays less than what I was making before. I would not have chosen this option but in life you have to play the hand you have been dealt. Just hope I can hang in there for this next round or so.

Really depends on what types of jobs you are looking for. Have a friend who was laid off a few months ago and was a high earner in an industry that is very down right now. He can’t find a job making anywhere near what he was. If you are living below your means and can afford a pay cut then you will likely find something faster.
