Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Better off elsewhere??

If you have left or have friends that left for greener pastures can you post the company name? I want to leave, but I’m scared! Is the grass actually greener or is every company just as terrible??

If scared work with a headhunter or recruiter for privacy. Plenty of direct hire jobs through agencies.
I am not an engineer, but left and am doing similar work. Salary a little less, but 3 bonus’ in 2.5 years and much better environment. Spouse says I am a different person!

I left for Ineos, have seen folks leave for bp, small consultancies, infrastructure industries like power and water… they are all doing well and are happier…

I wish I had my old co workers. I am surrounded by mindless robots. They would ki-l you for a penny or an atta boy from the management. N othing left around me but backstabbers' s talkers and show offs. There is no trust or camaraderie around me. I just stay in my bubble like prison. Solitary confinement is my workspace. I don t trust anyone I work around. All the nice decent people retried long ago. I have no friends at exxon mobil. I am the last of the dinosaurs and wont compete in the hunger games. I do my eight hours of time and then escape. I can do the few years of time I have left standing on my head if I have to. The company does not want it better the surveys are scams and so are the coffee chats. I miss the old guys we would talk about fun stuff and have a good time at work. Those days are long gone. We would work together as a team and could trust one another. I was never sc--wed over by one of my old pals back in the past. These young ones are hungry and will ki-l you in a second.

After my PIL, I jumped to Buc-ees. Buc-ee's management program is very good. They triangulate things nicely, make everyone happy. Empowerment is big, give tools to work with highly diversified workforce. Upward potential is high, you can go many levels up. Flexible hours help much, make work and life balance easy. Very good place for job and growth! And no NSI so far.

Everything people are saying is true and has been true for me. However, I do miss my old
Coworkers and the confident attitude a lot of coworkers had. Other places are softer which is good most of the time. It’s insane that people stress and backstab each other due to the fear the ranking system creates and for what? No one gets real bonuses. All that got % base Increases and maybe some RSUs?

Retired to pursue songwriting. Best decision ever. Third album coming out in October.

All these companies su-k in some way. My motto is find one that pays the most with the best retirement at the youngest age and make peace with it. Otherwise you’ll just end up swapping jobs to force your self to work longer. No IOC cares about you. It’s a job, just don’t mess up your retirement chasing a unicorn job that doesn’t exist.

At a startup now. Got a more than a 20% raise plus equity. I like it more than EM and don't have to deal with the same junk I did at EM. It gets better! Just keep trying to find a way out.

Left to go work at Pioneer after the PIP. Now it looks like I can become the first to be PIPed out twice. Lol

I landed at a private space company. No, not the one with the X in it. Started off at $220k per year base + bonus. I’m pushing $300k base now. I have a niche skill set though.

My time in O&G was mercifully short. A place like Exxon is a pit stop, not a career.

Retired, had a blast for year plus, back to work in remote position as a hobby, some light (and fun) travel, interesting work, cake walk effort and decent money. Any minor political BS is easily handled and pales in comparison. Salary plus pension and dividends more than last salary at EM.

Every place has its own BS, just find one that's the kind of BS you're able to navigate and work around. Been with four different companies, enjoyed plenty of things about the others, but they had their own downsides. It's w/e.

Lots of HR and safety people have left. They all say they are appreciated more at their new company. A little respect goes a long way. Some went to ups, amazon, tesla, aerospace in fort worth. It is at least different and not as bad for the most part. Good luck. Some went to work on autonomus robotics. Green energy companies, bio ethanol companies.

Aramco technology research center, sabic technology center, chevron. I have work at these places and the grass is definitely greener there. Valero was not bad either. I have a friend that works for Merichem and she likes it. The pays are similar and benefits as well. Most places give you vacation credit. Shell was similar to exxon in my opinion. Bayer back in the old days was nice I don't know how Covestro is now. Dow was sh---y and similar to exxon. You never know untill you try so don't be afraid. Use your skills you have gained and sell yourself. I know and engineer who stays 3 to 5 years at a company. Everytime he jumps he gets 10 to 15 k salary increase.

People that left retired and never worked again. This was the best. Second best retired and worked as a hobby or started a small business. Third best worked part time sharing knowledge at a home depot or similar place. Also volunteering is wonderfull to help those in need.

With a chemical company. I was not looking for more money but location was important. I got about the same pay counting the bonus. Stress is more self inflicted because I’m a perfectionist. But it is not the same king of stress. The kind of stress of being made to feel small… not good enough, and not feeling safe to be myself or speak up.

Have yet to meet someone who isn’t happier since leaving XOM.

Aerospace, Food & Beverage, Oil & Gas OEMs, Consulting, Renewables… lots of options.

Or you can keep hanging around with the lovely XOM folks on this forum who will tell you that you’re the problem.
