Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

Serious discussion. Are we all hacks?

We all see it… Intel was a plane sputtering in the air. Post pandemic gave Intel its last push and the plane is now crashing down.

All you see on this site are complaints of pay and “they better start paying us” before we leave for greener pastures.

The truth is most of us are just hanging on as long as we can. Even with the reduction in benefits year after year, Intel pay and benefits are still better than most non faang employers.

For people who want to retire soon, this is great… the rest of you will just be playing survive and advance for the next few years.

Yep, that's exactly the problem. Reminds me of the class I took about game theory in college. The less quality work people do, the less everyone else is incentivized to do good work. Between how the culture deteriorated over the past decade and how much hard work was cancelled or overlooked, I think a lot of employees got the message that their work wasn't being rewarded. Focal always felt like a crapshoot that was more defined by middle management's internal politics than how hard I worked in a given year.

Once you add to that reduced pay, back-to-back five-figure layoffs, and even taking away tiny benefits such as free fruit, what is going to motivate people to give it their all, instead of surviving until they can find a better job? Only people with the "I bleed blue!" attitude are going to keep putting in 100%.

This is the first intelligent and introspective post I have seen. None of us came to Intel to what we have come to witness today. We are not hacks. This is simply the way of the world. This is disruption. Older folk will remember floppy disks (1.4MB) then Zip disks (1Gb ish) and then BO-M USB. Same thing happened with SATA and then M.2 SSD... This is just the way things go.

IF you sat on your a-s thinking that the golden days would prevail and wished that some messiah would save you without updating your skills, you have to bear that responsibility.

IF you think that anyone but yourself will save you.. well you own that. Its easy to blame someone else and say that we have been misled, H1B blah, blah..., but after seeing the common folk suffer 5% pay cuts, with no bonuses last year, while ELT was just dandy even with cuts.. you need to own not reading the tea leaves.

The Pentagon will continue to use Huawei Chips, they have said that much. https://fortune.com/asia/2024/07/03/pentagon-huawei-ban-national-defense-authorization-act/

This is not a Pat thing. This is simply the nature of global economics. We are in a new economic and industrial era. old ways will not work. Old CEO's will not work.

I would actually suggect emailing PG directly with ideas to fix Intel if we have any?

Ask yourself a few honest questions, are you really proud of what you've learned at this job. Have you learned valuable skills? Do you admire those around you? Have you ever met one truly decent mentor? Are you proud of real work you've accomplished? I certainly know my answers.

We have been the laughing stock of the industry for some time now. Many companies out right refuse to hire former Intel employees.

I don’t agree with you. This is what is really going on with Intel. In the VF for trending fab performance we have Crystal Ball, SQL Pathfinder, and GAjT. All of them are outstanding and well written tools made by smart and capable teams. But they all do the exact same dang thing redundantly! This layoff we’re going to strip back to just one of those systems. Pat mentioned this in the ACM and redundant reporting was the ONLY specific thing he mentioned going after

The rest of the semiconductor world sees us as hacks and liars. We are just waking up to and realizing that fact now and that is how they all really see us as.
