Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Reasonable Commute Time?

Hey there! Is there a definition of a "reasonable commute " time at the company? I was just informed that starting 8.16, I need to start commuting 160 miles round trip. I was hired during covid as virtual. I'm grateful to have had the exemption this long, but I am frustrated at the communication and the timing (2 weeks notice, when last year, everyone was given a few months)?!?! Further, school does not start for my children until after labor day. With a 160 mile commute, I'm in a no win situation if trying to balance my job and family.. ugh! Thanks in advance for any advice!

It's just like many many MANY other jobs...
If your job moves you must decide for your own situation whether it is best to move for the job, or best to stay and commute, or best to stay and find another job....
This is not an AT&T thing, it has existed for a few hundred years..........
I know many people that have moved because their job moved, I know many people that have moved because they sought and got a promotion, I know many people that have moved because they sought and got a better job with a different company, AND, I know many people who stayed when their job moved and got a job at a different company...
This is normal everyday happenings at many many companies.
As we used to say, wake up and join the real world....

Perhaps see if you can rent a room close to the office and work three days Wed-Fri then home through Tues and then start the bs all over again. See how long you can take it while either looking for a new job or relocating your family (that is if you have a manager you can trust and they think you will be around for awhile). If not, start looking for a new job in the evenings while in your rented room. Unfortunately, it is a roll of the dice these days.

If you were hired virtual and now are required to drive more than 50 miles, they have to “re-offer” the job and gain your acceptance. If you decline they must pay severance.

100% agree: Do Not buy an EV.
You will have to buy a home charger(if you rent a house, apt, or condo UR out of luck.)
Advertised ranges for EV's drop dramatically in hot weather due to AC use.
If your charge runs out there is no "jump starting" Must be towed to a charging station
A hybrid would be much better---Good Luck

Never ever buy an EV as some suggest. That is very bad advise.

“It’s risky living more than 50 miles from a hub.”

I live near a hub and they still want me to move to live near a different hub.

  • sign a lease on an apartment in the designated area
  • hire a chauffer, work in the car on a laptop sim card, work in office for 2-4 hours, go back home working in the car
  • get a tesla and buy the self-driving feature

beyond that, things will slowly squeeze your life to death, they will require a full 8 hours in the office. leadership levels are aware of the badge-and-run tactic. you have about 3 weeks before you'll get your first HR warning that you aren't going into the office.

You could go into financial lock down and look hard for a new job. spend the 5 week period (2 weeks + 3 weeks till warning) to find a new job, so that you can start somewhere else by the time you get your first warning. 2nd warning will happen 2-3 weeks after your 1st warning. 3rd time - I'm not sure if you'll be fired or warned again.

all total, 7-8 weeks to spend looking for a new job and 100% blowing off RTO, doesn't sound terrible to me. If they ask why you aren't coming in, just get a rolodex made of excuses:

  • I have covid
  • I got covid again
  • My 90 year old mother now has covid
  • may have broke my arm
  • car broke down
  • basement flooded
  • getting fiber installed and they missed their appointments 3 times

I know several people that commute 2 hours each way. Living where you want to live has its perks but also difficulties. Get an electric vehicle and save some money.

What is that? 2.5 hours each way? Nope. Let the job hunt begin.

I’d start looking hard for a new job . 160 miles a day will take its toll quickly .

Hired during covid as virtual? Sounds like you’re virtually selected for layoff. Only 4yrs service they probably are hoping you’ll leave and save them the phone call.

T is life. 8 hours each way is doable.

They should have told people than when they were explicitly hired as virtual in low cost of living areas to save a buck.

Could be worse? When I lose TW my commute will be 400 miles each way.
