Can only speak for US, the brutal truth is that if you are a line engr (dev or QA or ops) manager, and you are not hands-on technically, you will have to get your next job by connections or by pure luck. Every large company, there are a lot of people want to be managers and usually those positions are reserved for internal promotions. Startup is never going to take non-hands line mgrs. It is perfectly OK to pursuit a management career starting within CISCO, but you have to either stays hands-on with relevant skills or you build great connections(so great they will hire you over again/again) with those people can get bigger positions.

Without either, you will have hard time to find your next job in management. It is your career, you have control to keep yourself relevant.

if you think managers can change LR decisions for their teams then you don't know how these things work. The decisions can be influenced only VP/SVPs or above

How many employees did you layoff during your 5 year gig as manager ? It is all karma.

Poor management at all big tech is hurting the Bay Area employees.

Twenty years Cisco veteran and never stayed off technology. Cisco Managers track is for a cozy job security in a stable economy without LRs. When sh-t happens. Cisco Managers have no skill that is marketable, and they are thrown out. Been there, Done that. Sorry you didn't see this coming.

Don't be a manager if you don't have any technical skills. And don't stay in Cisco for more than 2 years as a manager. From the industry colleagues, you will be considered as an outdated and not competitive enough to the tech industry standards. And this iss normal that we all know that Layoff happens every 6 months, amd difficult to find remote jobs
