Who determines which employee gets RIF

I got RIF in 10/23. My manager said he did not know I would be on the list. Can someone advise on how the decision to RIF employees is made?

Hi as a leader, it may depend on area. In my area, the directors and vps know. Frontline managers do not always know until the last minute.

I got RIF on 10/20. I was a good performer and my Manager suddenly started to micromanage me. He was sending me emails reprimanding me for almost everything. I was planning to resign in November. I got RIF on 10/20 which helped me out financially. So grateful I left this place.

Younger/offshore attrition rates are insane. A worker in there 60s have a better shot of being at the company in 5 years.

@1pvp+1tHc9i0W - You sure got that right. With every breath you take the grim reaper takes one more step in your direction. You're in your 60's now so your days are definitely numbered. When getting rif’d does HR tell you why picked, like telling you how poor performance or something? I’ve only had great evils, made or exceeded production every month for 20 years….never call out sick, get along with everyone, do anything I am asked. But I’m 62 and have been here 20 years. I can almost feel the rif coming for me

Two cents - I was suddenly getting "reprimanded" for poor performance about 90 days prior to RIF. Out of the blue when just a few months before I was told what a great addition I was and got a great review. I felt like I was being set up. And I was. Because I was found out to be over a certain age. Sorry but that is how they get around law suits - set it up that you are underperforming even when you aren't to cover themselves. It was so obvious in the exit meeting - everyone was "old." You don't have to believe it but it's true throughout corp America.

@zbs+1tHc9i0W you've already seen the list for August 8th? Or that manager having that guy surprisingly on the list was from a previous RIF?

I hate my anxiety. Anxiety makes you think every example given may be about you. This site and this last year or so have been horrible for everyone's health. This company is pure evil.

It's a combination of things. Low performance, paygrade, age (though they'll never admit it), redundancies (e.g., "can we put #290923123039's work onto #430493920392 for lower pay?"), and now, distance from PulsePoints is likely a consideration as well.

Given this is rumored to be a headcount reduction and not a cost-cutting measure, I think the usual rules have been thrown out the window, though. When they say "12% of workforce" as opposed to "12% of admin budget," they're looking for bodies removed from seats. I've heard of managers both here and in the rumor mill offering to cut other expenses to reduce their budgets and being told to still give names.

People leaders do submit names, but I have also seen people put on the list without managers being at all aware of it. (Not a rumor; saw the list with my own eyes and the manager did NOT know about it in advance, she never would've let this guy go and was absolutely stunned when she found out he was on the list.)

The following is from an IT POV only.

At one point in time, people under a dir or staff vp were rated against everyone else from that point down. The low rated ones can be the first to be RIF-ed

There have been cuts/RIFs in the past 18+ yrs, in IT, that have been purely salary based and some age based (sometimes the older folks are paid more than younger folks, not always).

There have been cases where the mgmt person knew who in advance (meaning more than the day before the RIF); other cases the day before; and still others the day of.

While the mgmt person knows who is low rated, sometimes they do not know how many until that said mgmt person is told.

Decisions are made way above your manager's pay grade. Performance has nothing to do with it. When I got Rif'd my manager was let go same day. He had no idea what was gonna happen.

Managers give names based on the ranking who is least significant in the team. I was part of 10/20.I was leading and provide KT to junior associates and offshores from last 1 year. So I kinda a knew if something happens I’ll be first one to go.

If you are not getting involved in any new work from last 6 months, most likely you will be on that list.

Mangers (non-VPs) know but they don’t know when.

Your manager decides but this depends on your performance the year prior to RIF. If you are an under performer, you'll be on the list for RIF.

An example when the manger doesn’t know is when the manger is being rifd (more often, fired) the same day direct reports are rifd.
