Thread regarding HCSC (Health Care Service Corporation) layoffs

Summary of HCSC Culture for Cigna employees?

Look, you have several thousand Cigna Medicare employees who have just gone from historic pre-pandemic WFH to sudden push to in office work, only to be told mysteriously to continue to WFH and hold down the fort (foreshadowing) , then massive and I MEAN MASSIVE LAYOFFS, being told that we are sold off to HCSC, Feds breathing down our necks due to poor leadership and bad business decisions, and high attrition with little to no re-hiring. Within a few months... this large group of people who have heard rumors that other HCSC employees feel we (Cigna Medicare employees) are unwelcomed after we have gone through the ringer and withstood this onslaught from our revolving Cigna Medicare door leaders. We will be at HCSC doorstep within a few months whether you like it or not, as a new line of business in a nationwide shrinking Medicare business/market.

What advice can you give to your fellow Cigna Medicare and HCSC future colleagues about your current state of affairs/culture?

No, there are a lot of Cigna (including MA) employees that are required to come in 3 days per week. The RTO started Sept 2023 and just keeps getting worse. First it was “more than 50% of your time, you must spend in office” but barely anyone complied so they changed it to set anchor days 2 days a week & a 3rd day of your choice & must be 8hr days! Granted most aren’t able to stay 8 hours due to traffic in most office areas being 1-2 hour commute one way. The worst part is they randomly picked folks from teams and made them come in but let their co-workers with same title, band level, less workload in most cases, stay home. It’s ruined morale and everyone is miserable. Most of us stopped working extra hours or nights/weekends to meet deadlines, or going above & beyond. It’s lowered productivity a lot throughout the company because so much time is wasted commuting, but I’m sure you guys are going through the same thing with your RTO policy.
Thank you all for being so nice to us with your responses, we’ve been through it the past year! Monthly layoffs, constant reorgs, more work piled on already full workloads, RTO, and the unknown of what’s to come with the transition to HCSC. We appreciate your kindness!

I don’t see WFH policy changes at Cigna Medicare, first off your employees are nationally located and so I don’t see how a hybrid policy would work where HCSC offices are located in a few States. Most HCSC employees are hired with proximity to an HCSC office for hybrid work.

So to confirm, Cigna Medicare employees are all fully remote WFH?

Regarding WFH, as someone else mentioned there's been a huge push for hybrid, which has hurt HCSC employees and made internal mobility difficult for telecommuters. I don't think there will be any resentment toward Cigna employees but I would not be surprised if Cigna employees end up facing similar challenges with internal mobility (unless the rules are relaxed to accommodate folks living far from an office, which may very well happen). But no one knows how leadership is planning to handle that.

We’re in this together y’all. This was genuinely nice to read regarding the WFH sentiments. It su-ks that you know leadership knows what the plan is, but we need to sit and wait for months to hear if we want to stay.

Three months ago I was planning to stay at the company long-term, but Medicare is heavily under-staffed and under-funded, and the workload is becoming completely unsustainable. Compensation is low, internal promotions do not come with much of an increase, and RTO plus PTO changes have eroded morale a lot.

On the upside, we DESPERATELY need the help so you will be welcomed with open arms. Assuming we don't get laid off first, that is. 😬 Layoffs are rare at HCSC but that PTO change has everyone on edge.

Do all CM staff have to make home visits?

HCSC was once rather forward thinking in terms of WFH, as far back as the early 2010s. But leadership changes frequently here and at some point, somebody decided we have too many WFH people. So now, deployments to full time telecommuting are extremely rare. The truth is, nobody outside of the top levels of leadership has any real idea of what they plan to do with current Cigna WFH employees. But no, I don't think many ordinary employees would feel any resentment toward Cigna keeping their WFH status. There would probably be plenty directed toward leadership...but that's not anything new.

They didn't give us anything to make up for the Diversity Day (PTO-ish) loss of 2 days. I don't think many of us outside of leadership care about Cigna people WFH, most of us like WFH as well. It's the leadership that doesn't like WFH. I've not heard anyone harboring any ill will towards the future Cigna people coming to us at all. We are used to mergers, and I've never sensed resentment towards people who merge into our company.

What are people’s thoughts on Cigna positions remaining remote?

Why did your PTO get cut?! Did they give anything to make up for it?

Current state of affairs is not great, as exec leadership team made changes to PTO on July 1 - in a nutshell, 2 days were taken from us and our 2025
PTO carryover is now only 16 hours (was 40). This is at least the third time in 10 years I remember changes like this happening.

Morale in my area has tanked and now AI is apparently a focus, too, and wondering how that will eventually impact my role.

I am still here due to my length of service and pension, and I used to love the company, but would no longer apply if I was just starting out.
