There's too much work expected to be done by too few employees and I'm just wondering if anybody at the top cares that we're getting completely burned out and leaving in droves? Or has this been the plan all along, just to save some money by not having to pay severance?

Yes, more layoffs.
This is a post written by a completely unconscious person. Get real… you are being worked to death. Leadership doesn’t care about you, you are a human resource and you are just a number. Get clear, so you can save yourself.
If you are burned out, or approaching burnout, go to your dr and get approval to go on fmla. Your mgr is trying to keep their job ,by doing what is directed. They know it’s not right, so moral dilemma and why he is sick. He actually has a conscience , for now.Own your tomorrow by owning your health. If you have a target on your back, to cut employees for bottom line, they will only make your life unbearable here. Then when you leave you will need time to heal. Heal now on their dime. Good look! And good health to you my friend!
You can stop working long hours and just work 2-4 hours a day and just collect your paycheck. Who is stopping you from doing that ?!
Kerosine?
Schwab isn't a sweatshop. At least in STS. It is a cesspool of incompetency where managers change objectives while crowing about KPI and OKR.
American work culture in my opinion.
Just su-ks.
Our “leadership” thinks our culture and working for clients is enough to sustain us. To encourage us to go above and beyond. They make many millions and we get to feel good we have a fake friendly culture and everything we do is for our clients.
I say - set your limits. Don’t work anything more than your 8 hour day. Reset expectations around what is feasible. Get more work? Ask for more pay. This isn’t a charity, we are not family, our execs are not leaving any pay for themselves on the table. Why should we?
All this talk about being overwhelmed by all the work seems a little bit exaggerated.
Seems you have worked serval companies then you should know there would SERVAL TEAMS.
Each team have it own challenges, you may be working in team which may stable but others may be working where team are highly volatile.
May be when you each such team you will also write the same thing

I worked for several companies, and the pace at Schwab went from slow to relaxed. In many department the stress level went down, when the people just causing problems were sent home.
There may be parts where there is now more to to. But, overall, the pace at Schwab is LOW. Stop complaining!
