Doing a job that I don’t like, which is getting me nowhere and will probably end abruptly one of these days with all those layoffs coming. It’s hard to be motivated under the circumstances. I know you’ll tell me to search for another job. I’ve been for a while now, but have not yet come across a good opportunity. I have a feeling there will be less and less of those.

Enough of the defeatist attitudes. If you don't think you are capable of finding another job then you never will. We all have significant skills in our toolboxes which when advertised properly will make us attractive to other employers. Good paying jobs are out there. Have some confidence in your abilities and go look.
Dell is not the only company to work for. I just don’t get the mentality. It’s like some kind of weird Stockholm syndrome. You are not your job. You can find and do something different.
Going on 13 years here, I share the same feelings. I would love to find a new job elsewhere that would allow me to grow but I am afraid my knowledge and skillset is not useful anywhere else and that I am already so behind on latest tech. If I get laid off I am probably going to switch careers all together at this point. Being STUCK is a terrible feeling and eroding my mental health.
yes, this is very true. Some groups tend to protect their own.
I did as well when I was at EMC. At EMC the main problem in my view was one ethnic group which occupied the middle management positions in many key places (including the org in which I worked) and the managers pushed by this ethnic group were making dubious and biased decisions protecting their own kind before anyone else..
Dell has become the Evil Machine Company period
Dell 2016-2019 was great. It was fun working. So fun it didn’t feel like work. Now I dread Sunday evenings because I know Monday is close and it’s another 5 days of stress, toxic co-workers, internal struggles, and more pointless KPI’s. No one looks happy in the office anymore. Everyone just has the same stoic look on their faces. It seems most people I talk to are all looking for jobs outside of dell. I know a lot that have left in the past few months. We continue to let good employees walk right out the door then replace them with college interns fresh into the tech world. Ok, venting is over with.
This feeling you're having a is a red flag. I've had this feeling when I've been laid off before... twice in fact. I'll be pretty blunt with you:
You may be having a difficult time finding a way to jump ship because you could be trying to apply for a position that is better than Dell. The skills you learn at Dell are lower tier... much lower tier. It's not necessarily your fault.
To large companies, working at Dell is laughable. To small companies, working at Dell is impressive... until they interview you and realize that Dell didn't teach you anything. I was in the same boat once. It's embarrassing. I think more and more companies are finding that working for Dell/HP/HPE/Lenovo is no longer impressive.
I feel this. The job used to be fulfilling but has become a slog over the past 18 months. I’m also looking elsewhere, but this doesn’t change my disappointment that such low morale destroyed a great culture in my circle.
Depending on your state I would stay and put all free time into developing an in demand hard skill set.
I sympathise. It’s no fun getting up each morning to do a job that makes you feel that way. You need to get out if that is the case. For the sake of your own health. No one but you can fix this. Get out…
You’re not alone. It’s sad how fast employee morale has dropped at this company. Then we express our concern on tell dell just to have the managers turn around and only talk about the positives of tell dell. They truly do not care and want us to quit. I know I’m never wasting my time on tell dell ever again.
Dell is EOL company. You definitely should put all available resources toward another job. Consider offers with lower salaries as well provided you feel it would be a great fit - i did exactly this 7 years ago and never came to regret it. In fact it was one of my best decisions..
Yep same here.
